UPC Cablecom Internet Speed Recommendations?

Hi everybody. Hopefully this one hasn't been asked too recently, I tried to check it out first.

Does anyone have recommendations for UPC Cablecom's internet subscriptions? My boyfriend and I are moving into a new place and I'm a little confused about which speed to pick. We have two laptops and two iPhones, the most we'll probably be doing at the same time is using Netflix and Skype/FaceTime. He also plays online games occasionally. I'm trying to figure out if we need 20, 50, or 125Mbit/s and I have no idea which ones will cover our use. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'd see what bargains are on but would take at least 50 meg. 20 for streaming if you don't have the full speed at any time may lead to lower quality.

Thanks!

Any device on WiFi will struggle to do more than about 25 to 30 Mbps throughput

So if you will only use WiFi, anything over 50 Mbps is a waste of money

If you do serious streaming on a cabled connection to a computer, then make sure you use a 1 GigE capable router/switch, and then you can go for 125 Mbps

Note that 125 Mbps is also a waste of time if your devices only have 100bT ports, because they can only do around 85 Mbps max throughput. So don't order 125 Mbps unless you are certain you can run LAN cables to your devices and that the devices have 1Gbps ports (1 GigE, 1000bT)

My 802.11n card claims to be connected at 270Mbps at the moment. Yes, I know it's not going to hit 270Mbps but it will speedtest at 100Mbps or more.

802.11g would probably have saturated at about 22Mbps but we're in a brave new world. Plus the UPC router is n-enabled so you could hit these speeds.

Don't forget multiple users means more chance to use the bandwidth. I'm finding my temporary VDSL solution to be very slow at 20Mbps....that's us and the kind neighbour hitting that connection. I'll be happy to return to 250Mbps

Hi Emmcee,

I have a situation pretty similar to yours (me and my gf, 2 laptop, 2 mobile devices using often skype or viber, even in the same time) and we had upc cablecomm at 32Mbit, recently upgraded at 50Mbit.

Already before we could always get at perfect speed! Streming without waiting times and excellent skyping...I would say that the upgrade (decided by them) didn't really change a lot, probably wifi and other stuffs are enough bottleneck to don't feel any difference.

Anyhow, I would reccomend you the 50Mbit, I really have nothing to complain about!

cheers
