US Physical Activity Guidelines recently published

I just found the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans page on the Health and Human Services web site. There is an action-oriented shortish paper, Be Active Your Way: A Guide for Adults paper, and a longer, but non-technical, paper with more details (and notes on special groups), 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans . While the latter is labeled "For policy makers and health professionals" it is easy to read.

It differs from the old Surgeon-General's Report in that it makes it clear that the 30 minutes of moderate activity five times a day is, in a sense, a minimum, and that, by and large, more is better. In fact, many of the examples they give have a target of an hour five times a week. They also come out explicitly and say that one minute of vigorous activity is equivalent to two minutes of moderate activity.

Also interesting is that they state clearly that muscle-strengthening activities should be part of any program. Unfortunately they say essentially nothing about how to set a muscle-strengthening program.

A good read for those interested.

Did you hear about the one for the banking industry? It's called the US Fiscal Activity Guidelines. {drum drop}
