I recently discovered this series of podcasts and have been finding them really useful as a vocabulary builder. They cover carefully chosen phrases that you would be likely to use at home or work, and which teach you the prepositions and cases that go with the verbs at the same time.
If you sign up you get an email at 6am daily with the new episode, which I find a nice prompter to do it over breakfast each day. But all the past episodes are available on the site too.
I searched on here a while ago trying to find something that was exactly like this but was not successful, so thought I would share now I have found this.
Thanks for sharing this. I immediately started listening his earlier episodes. Will definitely listen to this everyday! Although you said it's around B1 level, I find it not too difficult for my current A2 level. At least in earlier episodes It probably gets harder later
Actually, I agree, now that I have been listening for a few weeks. They go through phases of being easier/harder and I think I joined at a hard point (I just use them as they come, I haven't gone back to previous episodes). But in the main, they are A2. Mostly the grammar isn't too tricky but the vocab is quite real world, not what you usually find in your typical course book. Something about the way it builds up through the episode really makes them stick in the memory!
Adding my thanks to the heap! Great find. I started last week and plan to go through them all: 203 episodes according to my podcast app! Even a dummy like me can't help but make a bit of progress with that much content. I am finding it difficult to figure out what his paid offerings are. If he wasn't releasing new ones all the time, I'd think it was an abandoned project.
He's quite engaging so even when the vocab/structure is basic I'm still able to pay attention enough to focus on my accent.
Has anyone found any other good podcasts? I wanted to like the GermanPod 101 offering but the male host's American accent distracts me (mine is bad enough, I don't need to hear another one).
I discovered a new podcast today thanks to Burglind/Eleanor keeping me indoors. Only 13 episodes so far but it’s promising. It’s hosted by twin German teachers but it sounds like they plan to have guests. Website link. http://germantwins.libsyn.com/website
Not sure what level it is. I’d say advanced beginner/low intermediate? There's no English translations, but the guys speak quite clearly and slowly while retaining a natural, conversational feel.
Episodes 2 through 11 deal with the top ten issues they encounter in their students. I’ve listened to the intro and the first two lessons (Reduktion der “en” Endung, Reduktion von Verben) and the setup is tops. These twins sure have a nice rapport... or maybe it's one guy doing both parts!
According to the intro, the podcast will be a resource for culture, vocab etc. It’s more the language as spoken day to day. A nice supplement to the Herr Professor podcast, which often has a focus on business vocab and corresponding pronunciation. I love how much practice I’m getting but I don’t work in an office. (I’ve got about 110 of the 250 episodes in my podcast app left to go!)
Speaking of Herr Professor, I have some news: I emailed him a month ago to say that I’d be happy to pay for podcasts at advanced levels and he said a pro version is already planned for 2018. Fingers crossed that it's sooner than later.
Does anyone know of any podcasts around B1/2 level in German but with content about Switzerland? It would be great if it's about learning German (from the perspective of living in Switzerland) but I'd also be interested in something like the Easy German podcast or the "News in Slow German" but about Switzerland. No offense to Germany, but I'd like to spend the short time I have available to practice German learning about the country I live in, rather than a country which is rather different.
I've tried the SRF Echo podcast which is a good start (apart from the lapses into Swiss German)... but does anyone know of any others?
I really like the NZZ podcasts. They are 15-20 minutes long in high German and easier to follow than the Echo der Zeit or indeed news from Germany. Topics are international but NZZ is a Swiss newspaper so there are Swiss specific topics and perspective is Swiss.
The “Hörspiele” that accompany some of the Zurich walks I mentioned in my post are worth downloading to your phone and playing while you do the walks.
You can download the routes and print them - I actually sent away for them via the website, as they are free and the larger format is better for my aging eyesite. At one time you could pick up the maps at the Tiefbauamt offices - maybe they stopped that with the pandemic.
The walks themselves take in different districts of Zurich and each has about 18 “stations” where the map gives some description or history of the building or spot you are at. I’ve learned a lot about Zurich from doing them.
