Probably a naive question, but does a vat number exist for employees.
I am making an online purchase and it mentions that if I can provide a valid VAT number, the VAT amount will be deducted.
I am not in a hurry to purchase, so I can wait until I receive a vat number.

No, the whole point is that it is paid by the final consumer. And no you or your employer for that matter can’t put private purchases through their business account either.

I am making a purchase from a foreign website, and they seem to have added their local VAT as well which they would refund if I can provide a vat number.
I would have to pay swiss VAT of course.

If you order from a business in the EU a Swiss VAT number should not be needed for a tax free delivery. A VAT number is only needed for intra-EU deliveries.
Try and see if the price changes and VAT is excluded when you enter a Swiss address.
That was the case but the rules have changed recently. Depending size and turnover many EU mail order companies are now required to collect Swiss VAT and vice versa.
