Vehicle registration issues

Hello all

I have a tricky situation with car purchase.

Heres background -

I have sold my car to a friend. Gave him all the papers but kept my number plates with me. He already registered the car under his name - no issues there.

Now I have bought a car from another canton (BL). The dealer will do a fresh MFK and the car will be ready this Friday. I have a copy of the farzugauswies with me and have insured it from Friday onwards under my Plates (AG).

Can I legally drive the car on friday with the AG plates on? I will not have the correct Farzugauswise as I need to get it after picking up car. Also depending on traffic I may not be able to reach the Strassenverkesamt AG on the same day. If thats the case would I be able to drive it on Monday to get the new vehicle document?

Thanks for all the feedback Guys n Gals..

You won't be insured until the registration paper is issued, this must be done before you drive the car.

They (both dealer and Zurich insurance) informed me that you need to insure first in order to get the vehicle registration document. Zurich has already sent the details to strassenverkesmt AG under the plates I have.

When I pick up the car I will not have the vehicle document for the AG plates. I will drive straight to Strassenverkesamt AG to get the new paper (the dealer will give me that MFK results confirmation and the old registration of the car together with bill of sale). If I cannot do it on Friday I will drive there first thing Monday morning.

You need to have the correct document matching the paltes, otherwise illegal.

That said, I sometimes drive the 100m from my local garage to my parking lot with no plates, but that is not quite legal.

Tom

Thanks... I dont know what to do as when I drive on Friday with the car it will be insured for the plates which are on it. The only document I will not have would be the registration document. This too I intend to collect on the same day after picking up the vehicle.

If the new insurance matches the new status (car info correct, new registree correct), then should be fine.

But best check with your insurance to be sure.

P.S. If it has plates, it's insured with those plates!

Tom

Surely if you kept your plates then the old insurance is still active?

Normally they only cancel your insurance when you hand the plates in?

Mr. fatmanfilms, and st2lemans are wrong.

Yes you can attach the plates to the new car and drive it. But before you do that, you have do just a little bit of paper work.

For future reference here the full approach, when you switch from one car to anther:

- Get insurance quote for new car.

- Check with insurance agent that insurance details were sent to SAN/StVA (Can be done in 30 seconds, as it is fully electronic)

- Go to website of your SAN/StVA ( http://www.strassenverkehrsaemter.ch )

- And look for Fahrzeugwechsel, there is a special form for that.

- Here Canton AG Form

https://www.ag.ch/forms/getForm?form...8c02&mode=prod

-Fill it in with relevant details, print it out twice, and sign both copies.

- Make a copy of gray card of old car, gray card of new car.

- Put original gray card of old car (if not already annulled), original gray card of new car, one signed copy of the form into a A post marked envelop addresses to SAN/StVA and throw it in a yellow post box.

- Put copy of form in new car. Store copies of gray cards in a save place.

- Mount old plates to new car.

- Drive. (Important, the envelope must be in the mail box before you drive of!)

- In case of a police control show the copy of the form you have in the cars.

- Wait until you get new gray card in your name with post. No wasted time at the SAN/StvA.

- Form is valid for 30 days. If you don't get your new gray card within 14 to 20 days check with SAN/StVA. That's where the copies of gray cards become handy.

Drawback: You can not drive aboard before you have the new gray card.

I've known:

- Go to STVA in old car

- Handover Grey card, get it annulled

- Drive to dealership 20km away in old car on numberplates

- Part-exchange car for new car

- Put old plates on new car - with the new car having the grey card with new owners details

The Swiss are considerably more blasé about the whole thing

Thanks, have you actually done this? Looks pretty straightforward.

Once with a motorcylce. 18 years ago.

I'll try it and see how it goes. Insurance confirmed me that new details were sent to STVA within 10 mins of me giving them new car information. All done electronically.

All should be in order in this case

A very big thank you to "aSwissInTheUS" for the great information.

I posted the documents last Friday and today I received the new document by post. All went pretty smooth and super fast...

Thank you to all the others too..
