Very Large internet connection? (+100Mbit, Colleges etc..)

Hi, I'm kinda new to Switzerland and don't really know the communication infrastructure here so well, However i'm trying to research where their is options to connect to fibre network here, in other countries they call this MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

This would be for universities and large business with +100Mbit requirements.

It's basicly a set up from SDSL and VDSL

I know it's kinda a long shot question for such a forum but thought i'd ask

Thanks in Advance

what do you really want?

Cablecom will sell you a 100Mb connection which is fibre-based (at some point) and uses (Euro) DOCSIS 3.0.

If you need speed, this is presently the best option.

The only thing, I believe, education and the like can add to that is IPv6.

why don't you try calling the companies directly to ask?

Thanks Boxman, just checked out my address in Cablecom, and unfortunately only Winterthur, Zurich and Bern are available at those speeds. however i don't think they would allow business on such a product, will check this out

We are in Schaffhausen and this limits our options drastically!!

I think all i can go for is, SASAC (some local ISP using DOCSIS coaxial cable) and obviously Swisscom

However regardless of copper and fibre providers, is there any wireless providers for Fixed wireless and micro-wave connectivity ?

Can I ask what you are planning to do with this service?

If it is running a company server, can't you located it in an area where you have the best connection (even though you are elsewhere)?

sadly, the options are limited. Sounds like you might need A(V)DSL - do you really need symmetric?

If you define your requirements, you might get a better answer. Someone like FriendlyKiwi might come along and give some good information

You would have to contact providers directly to arrange this sort of connection, you certainly won't be able to do it via a webpage. Swisscom would be the logical start point, being the incumbent and owner of much of the backbone.

Although fibre to the home is only rolled out in certain areas, this does not mean fibre is not available to commercial customers. Providers will work with you and give you quotes dependening on your proposed location and whether or not any digging will be involved.

I need to connect our server room here with a remote site; we have a high-availability cluster here and another on a recover site, but both can be active at any one time. It could be up to 20 servers or so working between sites

Symmetrical link with at least 10Mbit up/down; block of public IP's, contention ratio no less then 1:4 or if high B/W available contention can increases.

Bascilly to be able to copy mulit-gigabyte (e.g 20GB) files from one site to another in a reasonable amount of time 8hrs less

Either of these companies should be able to help. (I'm sure there's many others, these are just some I've worked with here in Switzerland.)

It sounds like you'd be better off with a dedicated point-to-point leased line / MPLS link between your two sites...

Cablecom can do up to a 1Gbps fiber internet connection, if you have the budget for it...

Or up to 10Gbps private data connections...

All a question of your budget.

How much would the budget have to be for a 1 Gbit connection up and down ?

Just curious if someone knows at least an estimation.

Perhaps if I win the lottery I could get one or convince my current company.

I work for one of these companies - I am not going to divuldge who, but if you are serious about this PM me....I will be able to put you in touch with the correct people within my company to provide a solution for your needs.

Almost impossible to say, depends on where location wise and availability and what it will be used for; internet and/or site-to-site IP connections

However after the costs of building up a connection to support 1Gbit to the closest IXP and arranging peering agreements, the costs could be next to nothing at that stage

This is the Swiss Internet Exchange

At CERN they would have something similar

Seems to be a few of us here - I wonder if we work at the same place?

Assuming the company is in Bern, which is a well fibered, city, you'd be looking at prices that are in the range of thousands to tens of thousands a month depending on many factors like existing cables, type of redundancy, contract term, and setup fees.

Hmmm.....not sure......as I am not aware of any Kiwi's working in our office (sorry, I have made an assumption here, please forgive me if I have got this wrong)

PM me if you would liek to take this offline

Any one know if these guys?

Litecom http://www.litecom.ch/ they look like the carrier for http://www.litexchange.ch/ and use Axpo AG infrastructure (maybe, spotted the logo on the page

+ they have a network coverage on their site

Have you had any luck with Colt? as i've found it differcult to contact the right person there
