Very late handover date

The landlord of the new apartment I want to move in is forcing upon me a very late handover date: the last day of the month at 13 o'clock. (I need to move out by first of July and they told me that they can hand over the apartment to me at 30 June at 13.00, saying that the current tenant cannot move sooner).

I will be difficult for me to move and clean the apartment in half of day, also the

current landlord will want to hand over my current apartment to the next tenant earlier.

How should I proceed?

Moving is always so stressful! This is quite normal practice and consider yourself lucky it's not on the 1st of July at 13 as this happens also.

Could you rent a truck and put your stuff in overnight?

Moving companies are used to this and can sort it out for you also.

Don’t worry so much about cleaning. That should have been done to Swiss standards before you take possession.

I think they’re referring to the cleaning if their old apartment after they move out. They won’t have much time to do that before the handover to their current landlord.

Ah!

pack early and get cleaning done early so that on the day you only need to do a touch up cleaning.

This is in fact fairly standard practice, when I was renting I think all of my moves were under similar circumstances with a very short turnover timeline. As kri said, it's also not unusual to only get keys on the first day of the month, you are actually getting a bonus day by being able to move in on June 30.

You need to have everything in boxes and ready to go before the handover date, if you are hiring professional cleaners and have some furniture you could e.g. pile all your boxes onto the bed or sofa and have them clean around them as best they can. Or have them clean the afternoon of June 30. I don't think you will get far by trying to negotiate a change of date, although there is nothing to prevent you from asking.

The trouble is, the older we get, the more shit we have to move !! Over 30, becomes hard work ....

I understand you have not fully negotiated the handover with the current landlord, so it seems that your wiggle room is there.

- you can propose to move on the 30th and have the cleaning+handover on the 1st, which is Friday

- you start now living in only one room, and you clean the rest as soon as you pack it

- you have a company clean on the 30th afternoon, and you do the handover to the old landlord on the 1st early morning

The third option exchanges money for time, may be expensive but money comes back, life time not plus a company can give you the "handover guarantee" which removes additional stress.

In general I don't think you are legally forced to hand over anything earlier, but if you end up bein inflexible there be prepared for them to be inflexible in the other direction - no bad feelings, just everybody is trying to buy himself more time here.

In any case the sooner you clarify this the easier will be for everybody to adapt and organize.

Thank you all for your contributions.

I asked the new landlord for a more early handover but they told me they cannot help me.

This is kind of strange for me since last time I did the handover on 27. I guess I was lucky and I did not know it

I will clean as much as possible from before then I will move put on 30, I already scheduled with the moving team, then come back and prepare the flat for the handover next day at first hour (8AM I suppose - I could do earlier too by I suppose it must be during the working hours.)

Also I will notify the old landlord from now(Monday actually) since the sooner the better.
