I recently moved to Zurich and I am currently evaluating the purchase of a vintage car with Veteran status. I read that for these cars, there is a maximum mileage of 3000 km or a total maximum in 6 years of 18000 km.
Since this would be my only car and I would love to visit many places in Switzerland but also to go often to Italy (where I am from) and Germany (where my girlfriends come from), 3000 km is really not a lot and I was wondering if there is a way to drive the car more than this annual mileage. The guys at the road office told me that I could travel it more than 3000 per year, but that at the end of the 6th year, the total mileage should not be more than 18000. Is this the only way? What happens if I breach the 18000 km limit before the 6th year?
Technically you should be able to register it with normal status, so you would drive as much as you'd like.
Veteran status is something that in my mind you do because it has taxation benefits (max 400 CHF road tax per year in Zurich for example), and because MFK is every 6 years not every 2. There are also other benefits, but I hope you're not planning to road-trip heavy machinery
So it's intended for cars that are "collected" and not "used" as such. If you're planning to use a 30+ year-old car, first of all congratulations and I like how you think. Secondly, it should be roadworthy, not for the MFK, but mainly because you want to minimise the chance of getting stranded. We've gotten used to how good and reliable modern cars are, it's easy to forget that getting to your destination in an old car is not a given.
So if you really want to use the car, I don't see a reason why you'd classify it as a veteran. I don't know if it's possible to change the status back to "normal", but asking to STVA should give you all the answers you need.
Yeah I was also thinking about that, to get a normal license for it and drive it normally, but I was not sure if this can be done. I don't want to drive it like crazy but at least around 8-9000 km per year..
It is a Porsche 944 Turbo from 1989, so quite a reliable car with the right maintenance and care.. but I don't know if it would be worth it to go again through the MFK process now that it already has a MFK (with veteran status) from March 2022..
