views on newer cablecom modem?

i see cablecom are offering a Technicolor TC7200U wlan modem now..

whats the geek thoughts on this unit ? or is it just a rebranded thomson unit?

i ask as my thompson seems to be dying, random weak signals, cabled connection dropping out, box resetting itself etc.

could it be overheating?

I noticed my Thomson has developed a brown colored patch in the top, while it's supposed to be all white. It was always in a well aerated location and put in normal position over a shelf. Since I noticed, I have artificially lifted it by putting some books below one side, so it's now "in diagonal" and has a better airflow for below the unit.

Since then it does not seems to be getting more brown, or especially hot.

But certainly my model has some design flaw regarding heat dissipation-

It could be similar for you, to a more serious stage?!

What about firmware, is that flashed to the latest firmware available from your ISP?

I have one and it's better than the Thompson. But the Thompson was really really bad

My thompson is absolutely brilliant! Beside the overheating problem, I have it since 2 years and zero problems, nada, perfect!

It's such an improvment compared to the previous horrible cr@p dump from sunrise (zyxel)...

What was your model?

What was bad about it?

Mostly the feeble signal strength. I live in a small apartment and would only get 1 bar in some places

The wifi...

Wifi could be due to many many reasons including interference, over saturated channel, etc...

Also could be bad compatibility between your wireless receiver and the wireless router chipset...

Anyway you usually get basic wifi with any ISP device (and you probably paid for it like 5chf/months or something).

Wise person are getting their own router and bridge the to the router.

In fact we probably use "router" badly because the devices are primarily modem (modulateur/demodulateurs) and offer routing capabilities...and sometimes wifi.

Well, you probably have a bad example because I guess your newer "router" (or ISP device) seems to be better with Wifi, but really to get the most of it, get your own device.

Look:

30chf... NEW!

They have technology like "MIMO antenna technology for good coverage." (multiple-input and multiple-output), good internal antenna, etc...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIMO

All that would have resolved your problems!

I bet your device had a poor internal antenna also, along with basic technology (+ the possible external causes mentioned earlier).

or....just be happy with the new modem + router I got from cablecom because it's much better?

Yes sure- but in fact your complain is a bit unfair, based n the fact that what you got is a MODEM (or whatever similar device) with wifi capabilities.

You did not get a proper wifi router with allt eh good wifi technologies.

It's a bit like you get an Audi A3 and you claim that this car was was really really bad due to the Audio quality...

Get the point?

So yes maybe it has a terrible audio (fake example ), but the car is a car... The audio is kind of accessory.

While you would have got the "audio SOny whatever plug and play device for your Audi A3", you would get an excellent car + excellent audio.

In short, your comment addressed to the thomson device is somewhat unfair.

I also understand that now you have a better device with good enough wifi for you, well that's also possible that they put a decent chipset, decent antennas, whatever- which makes you happy enough. Well then yes, no need to change device.

PS: I'd bet you are paying for the wifi option anyway, like 5chf /months

A funny feature, usually poor performances, while you get much better for as little as 30chf for a brand new device!

Actually, Technicolor is Thomson. They merely renamed themselves three years ago:

As to me, I use the Ubee modem from Cablecom connected to a Trendnet wifi router. It works well (but then again, at 2 Mbps what wouldn't).

The wifi capability I part of the thompson device so no it isn't unfair at all. It's the overall package.

If I bought an Audi and a Seat and with all things being equal except the quality of the Audio, then yes...I would say the Seat is a better car.

Well, that's your opinion.

And provided the many external factors (such as your own receiver, state of the WiFi network, etc...) i'd say that you are not in the position to make such a critic.

Well, certainly something was wrong, but you are not 100% sure of the root cause. For example, it might have been that your own wifi received bugged with that specific chipset. Or another possibility, your received for automatically updated with x or y drivers, firmware upgrade, and it "resolved" the wifi issue.

Anyway, at the end I don't care. Especially that, I repeat, you probably pay for your wifi option

I have a cablecom package which came with a free modem/router and there is nowhere written that I specifically pay for wifi.

now now children which size handbag would each of you like?

I have the Technicolor at my new place. I don't really like it. Bad Wifi reception and cannot assign static IPs.

If you don't mind those two things or have a dedicated switch, it's not too bad I guess.

Ok if we go into details then it's better to give the model version...

Because it's not really relevant to say "my technicolor" blabla... Which model?

What version?, etc...

Then you can start to give a decent critic and try to find solutions- (firmware, receiver, antennas, etc, etc...)

I didn't want to go into details, just wanted to let the OP know my experience for what it's worth, since noone else did.

OP mentioned Model no. and there's only one Technicolor modem available atm, that's why I didn't bother mentioning it.

Also didn't bother looking for a solution to the wifi, since it was only a temp. requirement. Using an ethernet-cable now to max. throughput in my Gbit-Lan.

Do you work for Cablecom? Do you have experience with the Technicolor?

Do I need to work for cablecom to reply?

Do I have experience with that device (Technicolor TC7200U)... no!?

Does it changes anything?

In fact I looked your link, (in german, ein no spratschfeeen deuustch!!!*

*that's my German!... ) after google translating it.

In fact it does not illustrate anything

It does not talk about "bad wifi reception" but mostly people disappointed to discover that Technicolor TC7200U is a stripped down version of a device with more features called Technicolor TC7200 (without the U).

They complain that one can not use simultaneously both frequencies (2.4GHZ and 5.GHZ)-

But even using only 1 2.4GHZ or 5GHZ does not means bad performances...

In fact. You only connect to 1 anyway---

For you it means that if that device would have 2 modes at the same time, let's say A and B, that you could connect to A and B with different devices.

Let's say A has a wifi name (SSID) of MyAwifi and B has a wifi name (SSID) of MyBwifi... So your Android tablet using 2.4ghz would connect to MyAwifi and your laptop, with 5ghz, would connect to MyBwifi-

it's not possible. You can either activaze MyAwifi or MyBwifi.

So in the example, both Android tablet and laptop would have to connect to either MyAwifi or MyBwifi...

Nothing related to performances!

PS: I'm not saying you don't have bad wifi performances, obviously- But you don't know the root cause.

Is cablecom offering this new modem by phone or online. My upc account has no mention of this. I am also constantly having problems with my router. It resets itself and then is offline for about 5 minutes until its back to normal.

i saw quite a few comments on the cablecom forum that people have had this when replacing the horizon or thomson box - also because of resetting and poor signal strength
