Somebody knows if as a husband of a recent elected intern in ILO I can have a residence permit to stay in geneve? The internship is for six months and we're from Colombia. Any experience? Suggestion?
My guess would be no as the internship is only for 6 months. After all you can visit for up to 3 months without the need for a tourist visa. Best check with the Geneva migration office to find out for sure though.
Well bear in mind that what your spouse earns has to be enough to support both of you financially. I’ve heard that many internships in NGO’s aren’t paid positions. If that’s the case they will need to have sufficient savings for two people to get permission.
On the other hand, in the real life, how much do you think one person needs to live with, in a completely-reduced-luxuries scenario? Do you know a good but cheap health insurance?
Thanks again!!
Well, general figure to work to is usually CHF100 per day, but it depends if your spouse is getting accommodation provided, etc. Also there are accommodation requirements: the least you’d need is a one bed place I think. A studio may be okay for a single person, but not sure it would be acceptable for a couple and certainly just a rented room somewhere wouldn’t be.
There is no cheap health insurance here. Expect to pay around CHF300 a month.
I think 100CHF per day per person? So about CHF 3000 per person per month

Internship salaries are designed in a way that they allow a very basic lifestyle for ONE person, the life a student would typically have. There is absolutely no way and I mean no way that two people could live on 1900 - rent and various mandatory nsurances, even the cheapest available, would already reach or exceed that and then you haven't even eaten yet, let alone done ANYTHING else.
Often they place interns in student accommodations, in single rooms, and typically you are not even allowed to have another person live in that room (visit 2 days a week yes, live no). So you would need to rent your own place, which you of course can't afford. Flat share, maybe, but you'd need to find someone who's willing to take in a couple (probably not many offers around) or has two rooms available and then there goes the whole salary already.
So sorry, not a chance. If you have significant funds - roughly at least 100/day, i.e. 18'000 for 6 months - well maybe, but even then I doubt it as her employment is only for 6 months.
