VOIP Softphone experiences/recommendations?

Hello all,

I run a small business from an office in Zurich and prefer the portability and flexibility of VoIP. However I'm currently using free software by X-Lite, which started out OK but now has constant problems. Does anyone here have any experience with free or paid-for software, and are there any recommendations?

Thanks

James

On what device(s)? Which provider?

Hi Joe,

I use peoplefone.ch and I'm on Sunrise, running a Macbook Air. could Apple compatibility be an issue do you think?

James

If it was working before it I doubt it's a compatibility problem unless you updated IOS or the app. Have you done the obvious un/reinst?

Tried un/reinstall, but with X-lite being a free to use software customer services is non-existent, and my VoIP hosting company and ISP point fingers at one another. I'm happy to pay for software, but there's a lot of offers out there and conflicting reviews so it would be great if someone out there could recommend an option. I've so far short listed:

Blink http://icanblink.com/

Jive http://jive.com/

Shoretel https://www.shoretel.com/

I run a small business in CH and have a partner in Australia.

We communicate with Whatsapp.

We used to use Skype but found that since Microsoft bought Skype, it has gone downhill

Whatsapp is not a perfect solution but it is free and runs directly in your smartphone

hope this helps

Are you sure that you have a software problem and not a SIP VoIP provider (or Internet connectivity) problem? In my experience, once the software has been configured, it just runs. (But my private use of SIP VoIP is light.)

On the Windows side of the world, I can recommend microSIP (free, opensource; http://www.microsip.org/);;) there seems to be an OS X sibling at

(On the Enterprise level, I cannot praise Skype for Business highly enough.)

PS: Mega-stupid question - iChat as part of OS X allegedly does SIP? Why don't you use that? The German language Wikipedia has a nicely sortable table (which the English language Wikipedia does not have) which lists the world of VoIP: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_von_VoIP-Software

I use Voipbuster, its not free, but very cheap. Ever time, I charge it with 10 Euro's, I can call some countries for free for up to 120 days, after the 120 days are used, its 1 cent/minute, so my telephone costs for international calls are down to €20/Year

Here you can compare rates of voip providers. Most of them provide free landline calling to multiple countries.
