VW Sharan 2016, front brakes clacking noise when heating the pedal.

Good day all,

Just want to reach out here in case of a similar experience.

VW Sharan 2016, front brakes clacking noise when pressing the pedal.

I'm experiencing this for the past 6 months (2 visits to the garage) and Amag just wrote me this is normal. I'm furious, but lets leave that for another day, this is not a complain thread.

If this was normal the car would of made the same clacking noise in the first 2 years.

Has anyone experience / fixed the same with their latest model VW Sharan?

Was the garage able to reproduce the noise?

Did the garage replace any parts?

Did they give you any plausible explanation?

Can you make a recording?

Option 1 bellow asks me to install a buffer on a car that has warranty another 18 month.

Option 2: My car has clacking noise and they want me to change the brakes to justify their buffer installation.

"As communicated by phone, I confirm that the noise from the brakes is normal and does not affect the safety of the vehicle.

As also communicated by phone, you can drive the brakes in the front for about 2000 - 3000km until they are worn."

"- 1. option: We take the brake pads today apart and mount the buffer (cost: 225.-, but then you will pay as soon as the brakes are worn in 2000-3000km, again an additional 840.- for the replacement of the brakes, in which case the same Work (Removing / installing brake pads) is done again)

- 2. Option: We assemble the new brakes including the buffer today or in 2000-3000km if the brakes are worn out. (Cost: 840.- for the brakes + 15.- for the buffer,

so you save 210.-)

- 3. Option: We leave the brakes as they are."

That's fairly normal.

I'm not sure what buffer they're talking about, but if it really isn't a safety issue, and the brakes will anyway soon need work, then it's perfectly normal to say "Just live with it until the brakes need doing."

None of this work is on your warranty, as I understand it.

Brake vibration damper pad (anti squeal plate), most likely, especially considering the price.

I'd buy the dampers (and maybe new pads, if they're almost gone) and do it myself, half-hour job tops.

Tom

Funny you ask this. They told me they "fixed the problem", few months ago but today they told me today that last time they only put "mechanical grease" and that is why the clacking went away for a month only.

Tried to record but no real results. Cannot hear it properly.

AKA "anti squeal paste".

Tom

amag - enough said

What causes the sound? (besides the obvious "hitting the pedal" )

Also VW's have a system where braking starts making sound to warn you of upcoming worn off plates.

Anti squeal paste or plate would hardly cause a "clacking" though.

Perhaps a retainer spring, but that would be safety relevant.

No system sound for worn off plates. Plates are good for another 3000km (written by mechanic)

I don't know and looks like Amag doesn't know too.

Bad engineering of VW Sharan? Bad diagnostics (they cannot locate the problem) Bad driver - me

when does it happen? always or just first thing in the morning?

Almost every time you hit the brakes.

So, each time you apply the brakes it goes "Clack" or "Clunk" once?

Or when you apply the brakes it goes "clack clack clack clack"?

Correct.

Both sides, or just one?

Good question.

I will guess is only 1 clack.

Coming always from the same place/ side.

Sounds like the pistons retract more than needed, leaving some slop that results in the 'clack'. Thus, the anti-squeal paste or damper pads would cushion and quiet that.

Tom

If I'm not mistaken the Sharan has those little claw springs which hold the pad to the inside of the piston.

Perhaps Panfastic's hearing is particularly good. Most people can't hear pad slap.

The number of times I've asked "How long has it been making that noise?" and the answer has been "What noise?"...

We found amag Zug to be very much less than helpful when we were living in the area!.

If you have the time I would contact Pargger AG at Stans,

I stopped there at 4.30 one afternoon to ask about “ad blue”, the warning light had come on earlier in the day. They asked if I had 20 minutes and in that time drained the old and filled with new. The bill for the “ad blue” arrived in the post a week later. We used them there after for servicing even though we had to travel. Very accommodating and happy to help.
