Wasps.. in my window cavity? More likely than you think.

LOL ya I agree with ya about the Mormons ha ha. I lived in Utah since I was 15 until I moved here. What a strange place Utah is lol.

Indeed. Just shoot at them through the letterbox. Or is that why there are no letterboxes here?

I called these people. http://www.ch.rentokil.com/en/

An inspection and getting rid of the nest is 260 chf. They will hopefully be able to do all in one go. Just to come and look was 80 chf without any treatment.

The nest is somewhere on the roof and the access is going to be a challenge.

Since I am allergic and getting stung is a danger, I have no problems if they destroy the nest.

Will let you know what happens.

Yes, holes in the patio furniture, they did that here too (bees not wasps) so I responded with sellotape.

I like bees but don't want to invite them over when we are eating!

Ugh, my skin is crawling by just looking at the pic.

Go to the apotheke and ask for a bottle of this, and spray on them with a vengence. Take.no.prisoners. It is seriously your best friend during the summer months.

A dear friend of mine who has a titanium leg found that answering the door in his tighty-whities and saying " Please come in- let's talk about Jeaysus!" keeps the Jehovahs Witnesses away very well.

As to the wasps- if you decide to DIY, do use a proper poison if you don't physically remove them. I had a normal paper wasp nest appear between my inner and outer window once, full of larvae. I hosed it down with industrial strength Super Clean*, which will kill a 2" cockroach in less than 5 seconds. The parent wasps never came back, but a good week later I pulled the nest and cut it open only to be totally freaked out that the little larvae were actually pupae and were still wiggling!! I burned them for fear that I had created some mutated monster wasps.

*Super Clean is a sodium hydroxide (lye) based badmofo cleaner that used to be made by Castrol, but they stopped making it now.

Yeah, I thought you were going to say that.

I need something that will clean my oil leak on the garage floor. And everything that actually works is banned or illegal.

Ohhh- you haven't learned what a goldmine the Swiss Drugstore is yet! I have bought some very odd chemicals there and the only questions asked are out of curiosity on the chemist's part. Tell them what you want to do and they might just have an 'in house' mixture ready to go.

Yeah it's correct, but for the strong stuff you have to sign as understanding the risks and taking the responsibilty

Thread mod moved from pets to housing area. As you can tell from the change in feeling of the thread.. no more talk about animals/bugs, new talk about DIY getting ride of oil stains.

Well, come on, let's be fair...

You weren't really keeping them as pets? Were you?

Well, they are still there at my discretion, and there because I have an interest in them. So..

Pet: "to treat as a pet; indulge."

((edit) Reading the above makes me see what we must appear to be to the mods)

Of course in a weeks time I will become THE unmerciful God to them if they turn out to be anything other than bees.

Don't panic if you see wasps; there's no nest unless the Queen has settled. Keep an eye on their activity for a week or so before paying for exterminators.

I had wasps nesting in a window cavity some years back. They "ate" right through the cord that opens/lowers the outdoor roller blinds (which cost a fortune to replace).

Apparently some Gemeindes actually want you to report wasp hives -mine even has a link on their web page (which makes you wonder what they do about it exactly -hmm). Perhaps it's just so they can gossip about you

WHen I was looking for firms who deal with this problem, Wespenbekämpfung I found this company. http://www.petcontrol.ch

But I hardly consider a wasp a pet.

It's been a little while. In the meantime, the exterminator I called has no ladder! So now I will call the Feuerwehr. The Gemeinde told me they still do this, just no longer for free. But at least they have ladders.

They are growing, you can clearly see the difference.

Today 11-05-10 http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/2266/p5110208.jpg

At this rate it'll be a month before they emerge. Also, I found some in another windowsill.

Hmm, I have wasps on my patio that build nests similar to that, but I live in California, so I'm not sure if the type of wasp I have (paper wasps) are the same as what you might have, but it looks pretty similar. And they are annoying little buggers; there are tiny nests all over my patio, as opposed to just one big nest like any other normal wasp/bee. However, they are pretty docile as far as wasps go; I believe they only will attack if they feel threatened. I hate all varieties of wasps/bees/hornets though, so I'm not gonna get close enough to take a picture

I totally agree, I take macro-pictures of bees, wasps and even hornets (that's very impressive). Never been attacked and I believe hornets made some poses.....

They only attack if they feel endangered....

You are much braver than I, ha ha

Just steer clear of those Japanese hornets, I hear they're quite nasty
