WC (Water Closet)

Why is the abbreviation WC (which means water closet in English) used over here as the name for toilets when in England we actually use the word toilets ?

A ' WC ' in German is actually a 'Wasserklosett' so the signs if correct would read 'WK' . Strange eh?

I do wonder what (public) toilets used to be signed as here before WC...

What I find really strange... is that my little finger fits perfectly into my nostril!

Think about that for a second!

Good question. But now my brain is blocked for any other questions for the rest of the day! Need to solve this!

Hmmm, from WC to nose picking..., that happened quickly! I once read something about flushing your nose, though. I think it is called a Neti. But that is something completely different again.

Let me save you the pain - the name "water closet", and indeed the concept of such a room itself, originated in England in the late-middle 1800s. Pretty much everyone else adopted the name rather than invent a brand-new term for something that had just been invented.

So in answer to the original question, there was nothing before the WC, except perhaps a bucket and window.

On a contemorary note, one will still hear references nowadays to the "Klo" or the "Chlo" in German and SG respectively... tho' not of course in polite conversation (rather like nose-picking)

Me too but hey, let's move on...

But if you ask for it as such, you will be stared at as if you are an alien. So my question is, what does one ask for when needing to drop a duece?

An old high German word for WC is Aborten. (from & place [nothing to do with abortions])

Es stinkt aus den Aborten - es wird Frühling allerorten! (It stinks in the WC, it will be spring everywhere)

Kind of pronounced "veé-ceé"..

If you think that's confusing, consider that our US cousins call it the "bathroom".

As in: "Excuse me, where's the bathroom?"

Me: "Erm!?! Why?"

US: "Well I would like to go to the bathroom?"

Me: "But, we've only invited you over for dinner... *click* oh, you mean toilet..."

That reminds me of a plaque above the loo at my Mum's, which my Dad stole off a German train in his wild student youth:

"Während des Aufenthalts auf den Bahnhöfen, ist die Benutzung des Abortes NICHT gestattet"

(reciting from memory, grammar/orthography may be incorrect)

Maybe they wanted to check out your colection of metrosexual grooming products?

In that case, wouldn't they have asked for the little boys roo... ........ err, I'll get me coat

They'd be disapointed...

Deodorant

Shampoo (+ comb)

Shower gel

Shaving soap (+ razor + shaving brush)

Is there anything else that a man should have/need? Anything else, IMO is just surplus to requirements and bordering on (if not well passed) pretentious crap.

I should have added:

something for the weekend sir?

Aftershave?

Moisturiser? (I get dry skin occasionally)

No.

If you get dry skin, you can (sort of) claim a medical need, so I'll let you off...

Gee, thanks a bunch
