Trump travels everywhere around the world but when he comes here to WEF they have hundreds of military forces (air and land etc etc) guarding him. All for show it seems!!
*Snipers, checkpoints and exclusion zones for Trump and Co.: Davos transforms into a fortress during the WEF."
Interesting week ahead. Also, no win alternative for Switzerland.
The WEF in Davos could now be the place where it comes to the showdown. Because all the important figures are present in person. On Tuesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to appear. French leader Emmanuel Macron is also scheduled to give a speech in Davos on Tuesday. Macron is one of those EU leaders who call for a tough response from Europeans to Trump’s new tariff threat.
Trump’s appearance is then scheduled for Wednesday - so he will be able to respond to the Europeans. The WEF in Davos is thus becoming the stage for the showdown of the Greenland conflict.
Switzerland is not affected by Trump’s new tariff threat. But there is no room for relief or even schadenfreude. Because if Switzerland’s main trading partners – the EU and the US – should become a new tariff war, it threatens to hit the prospects of the global economy as a whole and also the economy of Switzerland sensitively.
In addition, the customs deal of the USA with Switzerland, whose cornerstones were laboriously tightened in autumn, is not yet in dry cloths. In view of the dispute over Greenland, the US delegation is unlikely to have the head to deal with details of the Swiss customs agreement.

“The Governor will be bringing an extra suitcase of kneepads for anyone lining up to bend the knee to Donald Trump,” Gardon said.

I’ve heard in the last couple of days the terminology shift from “tariffs” to “sanctions” because these rates no longer can be defined by the criteria of accepted tariff conditions.
“Sanctions” or even “extortion” (protectionist?) would be more fitting now.
Won’t he have that haunted polyp, Stephen Miller, at his side the whole time, though? He’ll be deflecting and bellowing at anyone in the press pool who asks “uncomfortable” questions.
Such a reasonable guy, surprising considering he’s French
Bessent said on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) that Parmelin is very well versed in economics. He has known him since 2025 and has a “very good relationship” with him. He is convinced that thanks to Parmelin’s leadership qualities, an agreement that is fair for US citizens and ensures lasting prosperity is within reach.
However, he also made a small slip-up. When asked by a journalist, Bessent said: “Parmelin is a fantastic representative for the French”, as reported by “20 Minuten”.
Switzerland is an industrial stronghold, Bessent continued. However, he was concerned that it could move closer to the EU and that “European bureaucracy” could weaken the Swiss economy.
He also criticized European product standards that make it difficult to import US goods. These trade barriers must be removed.
You need an office where everyone else is out on sales visits or WFH - very peaceful…
As for missing anything - his speech was mostly a re-tread of the bollocks he’s been waffling on about for the last week or so.
Specifically, though, he had a vicious attack at one point on Switzerland and Karin Keller-Suter when she went to visit him in Washington about the tariffs. I’m not convinced he knows he’s in Switzerland because he started his story with, I think, “I was in Switzerland, let me tell you something about Switzerland…”
Final applause was pretty muted.
ETA - oh wait, I forgot something - he confused Greenland with Iceland. Multiple times.
