What are the taxes for a Postdoc in Geneva as a foreigner with B permit?

I Lived and worked (as a Doctorate and now as a postdoctorate) in Zurich for last 6 years. I have been offered a position in Geneva (100%, class14, 81 k CHF gross salary), my current postdoctoral position is (75 k CHF gross salary, 80%). I have few questions and I really appreciate your help.

1. How much would be the Net income with 81k CHF gross salary in Geneva?

2. Is this the normal postdoctoral salary in life science?

3. What would be cost of living in Geneva?

Thanks in advance and have a nice day!

Regards

1. Depends on Civil status, children, religious affiliation (or not) and pension fund contributions, but I would say your net income will be around 69'500 CHF a year if you are single with no kids.

2. No idea

3. Depends on how many in the household. For a single perhaps somewhere in the region of 2'500 - 3'500 per month depending on rent and lifestyle. Health insurance and rent will anyway be your biggest expenses and you can get a very decent apartment for 2'000 albeit competition for that will be very tough.

To address question 2, yes, that is a very common starting salary for a postdoc. More years of experience can add more to this figure, but that depends on the HR of your university/school.

Use this calculator: https://www.lohncomputer.ch/en/

Pillar 2 contribution and accident insurance are good estimates and might be different in your particular case.

Thank you for your reply!

With a permis B you will be taxed at source and you can check the tax rate under:

https://www.ge.ch/document/baremes-r...18/telecharger

As CBGeneve already mentioned your net income will be around 69500CHF.

Tax rate would be would be 13.86 % as yo can see in the bareme.

Hi new postdoc in Geneva!

I am part of the postdoc association at UNIGE ( https://www.unige.ch/apdu/ ) and would like to make sure you got your info correctly.

1) Are you sure you will get 100% class 14, level 0? A big issue at the moment is for those in the Dept of Biology, we are getting 85%. If you are part of the Dept of Chemistry (Biochem) they have been offering 100%. Make sure you get that down in writing! Many times a letter has said 100%, but the actual contract states 85%. WATCH OUT!!!! Also, postdocs have not been getting the increase in levels until 2 years after (hence no salary increases). They also ignore pretty much all previous education in determining your initial class and level.

2) Netto would be around what people have quoted, 80k with 20% cut for tax/avs/2nd pillar contributions.

3) I am at 85% and I would say it is quite enough for everything. At a 100% you should be able to get buy comfortably.

Other than that, enjoy your postdoc and sign up for the mailing list for the Association!!!
