What do people do on a Sunday?

it's called 'grasse matinée' lol. Obviously you are not an OAP Tom

Rail-stations like Zch-HB, Zch-Stadelhofen and Zch-Enge have many open shops on Sundays. The choice at Zch-Oerlikon station is lousy but will become different in 2014. In the HB, the choice will even get extended in 2014 when the new 4 rails below Löwenstrasse-Bahnhofplatz become operational and the shopping area will get extended. Rail stations like the ones of Winterthur, Luzern, Bern and Basel (Basel-SBB) have quite nice shopping areas open on Sundays.

And let's not forget the shops at petrol stations. The Avia-shop on Mythenquai in Wollishofen is a Spar-outlet with even fairly nice prices and a good choice. The BP shop on the Mytenquai beside Wollishofen-Bhf is a good shop, except that the wines are a bit expensive. The ESSO/Socar station in Glattbrugg has a really nice shop. I just hope that Socar will continue the good work.

So that you in fact can do quite a lot of shopping on Sundays

Indeed, our local supermarket is opened every Sunday, wo/manned by the owner and family (as per the law). BTW don't bother going to France to shop on a Sunday - everything is firmly closed.

Not the case in Italy, some are closed, some not.

Here in the place where I live, laundry is officially done on Sundays also between 07.00am and 08.00pm (defacto also throughout the night)

And people move stuff between Keller and apartment and "attica" also on Sunday and nobody complains

Vacuuming ? Not in a big way, but for five minutes here, and half an hour later for seven minutes there, etc, is well tolerated

my fault with the gros matinee! we won't get into details hahaha.

thankfully there are a few stores and a nice market here for emergencies, but i do like the excuse for non shopping and time spent together hiking, cooking or other stuff... i must admit i was overwhelmed the last visit back to nyc because we didn't have that time to just relax and spend time do nothing (or hiking or whatever) without the temptation to get things done.

i find once i got used to the organization of it all (not my strong point, getting better), sundays became my favorite days.

Apparently I am by US standards!

Scary!

Nice excuse for inability to be creative there are loads of things to do which dont require shopping, there is no such thing as needing to HAVE to shop unless off course you are addicted to wasting money

Hi,

Sunday is my favourite day of the week. No shops are open and it is possible to chill. It is day when no one wants anything from you and you can relax. The only downside is that come Sunday evening you start thinking that you have to go back to work the next day I live the fact that there is one day when you can get up late and not have to do things...unless you want to. Why do people want to be doing something everyday...when do you chill out and relax ?

Have fun

Martin

Sundays are brilliant. Last Sunday, when the weather wasn't great, I made chicken stock, which I then turned into chicken noodle soup and had friends over for dinner, adding lemon self saucing puddings. I also went through six months' worth of food magazines, cutting out the recipes that I want to make and sticking them in my scrap book.

Wet, miserable Sundays are usually about slow-cooked food, books, tv/movies and writing my blog (which I haven't done for ages, as it hasn't been wet or miserable!).

When it's fine, it's about getting out in the fresh air and enjoying autumn, my favourite season. In fact, tomorrow I'm heading to Lavaux, to see the famous UNESCO-listed vines in their glorious autumn colours. It's also a great chance to see other parts of Switzerland.

There's loads of things to do, when you put your mind to it....

Will be re-planting the old orchard tomorrow, great.

Is this a sign of hard times or people just being obnoxious?

just lack of respect... and quite normal!

sundays here... i stand behind the net curtains with a notebook and monitor my neighbours activities so i can complain about them and leave unsigned notes that are doing x y z on a sunday and its Verboten ! and next time i will call the police.

Into deep sleep or masochistic visits to their in-laws or worse (outdoorsy stuff like hiking etc.).

Switzerland's pretty bad on Sunday's. Bedtime 24 hours that day. It's improving though - much quieter when I moved here in 2006.

I usually get an English newspaper and sit in the pub all afternoon - reminds me of home ...

Depends on the time of the year. Last Sunday I used the last opportunity this year to go swimming in the lake. On other Sundays I simply pay a visit to Coop Stadelhofen, and in good weather to to the lake to enjoy it while reading papers or a book. I may decide to get around by bike a bit or visit an exhibition or a museum. So that it depends on the season, on the weather and on my personal mood.

But you are in Basel, and the Coop just accross from Basel SBB was the first "real" shop to have open regularily in Switzerland. It was a sensation and covered in the press extensively. The shopping areas in rail-stations in Winterthur, Zürich, Luzern and Bern followed later.

I don't know about Basel, but in Zürich, the rail-stations Zch-HB, Zch-Enge and Zch-Stadelhofen have shopping areas open on Sunday, and Zch-Oerlikon will follow in 2014. I cannot tell about all the other rail-stations, as to develop a Sunday-open-shopping-zone is not so very difficult really. IF

the buildings are there

& the space is there

I might imagine something to go ahead at the rail-stations of Schaffhausen and Lugano, but last time I was in each place, nothing real was around.

They all go to church of course!

Hmmm nope, not around here anyway. At this rate we will be skiing tomorrow- then Cine-club at 5.

Trips, via feratta and beach during summer, museums, friends and parties during the autumn, ski and fondu during the winter, concerts, cinema, reading during the spring...
