I have run High Sierra on a 2012 mac mini for the last five years and it has been a great and stable OS that does everything I need.
Now it seem that to continue here on the forum or anywhere else where Discourse is used I need to update my browser. Using Chrome for now, only the new Chrome does not run on High Sierra and HS is the last OS I can run on this machine without trickery and emulators. Basically I am forced to buy a new mini and update all the programs I use for a lot of monies.
Why can´t they just leave stuff alone?
Change browser? I use Firefox for Discourse and also Edge.
Same thing, update or die.
I know nothing about Apple or OS. But that’s what windows basically said about my PC and I changed to Linux. Very happy with it. So can’t you do that?
I have zero knowledge of Linux.
I do know however that Linux can run on macs if they are apple silicon based machines built from 2021.
My stone aged 2012 intel based mini doesn´t stand a chance.
So, just look for the last version of firefox that work on that OS. It seems firefox worked until version 115. Since then, mozilla provides and special firefox : “Extended Support Release”.
PS. my personal laptop in an HP from 2012
I have the same things on some of my older laptops (which can no longer be easily upgraded).
I wrote to the software developers to try to ensure that even older browsers can still logon, read and post even without the bells and whistles, but I will not hold my breath on this.
Though using forum software is probably the least of your worries, older browsers may have unpatched security bugs, which can be an issue e.g. for online banking. My bank blocked my browser already a long time ago.
I can still access mine, but it is a bitch to get into and requires my cellphone to activate, so by now I just use the phone.
However I do think that this mac is starting to show it´s age even though I am reluctant to replace a perfectly working system.
I tend to use my computers the same way I use my motorbikes, in use until they are held together by bailing wire, gaffa tape and prayers.
Another option, if your computer supports it is to run a virtual machine on the computer and install a more modern operating system on the virtual machine.
I tried that once for another project but it slowed the machine down so far that I gave up.
Maybe try brave browser?
I can’t run Big Sur, High Sierra is the last OS I can run.
According to google
“You can boot from a USB drive with a Linux distribution (like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or others) and install it onto the Mac Mini.”
Depends which is less painful, learning LINUX or buying a new Mac.
Read the second paragraph in my link. Worth a try.
Ah. Sorry
It was a good try though.
2018 MacMinis can be picked up rather cheaply.
Literally Pennies on the Dollar (having paid over 2500 for mine, Apple’s trade in value has been zero for a long time and I’ve seen an identical configuration to mind go for 500ish CHF on Ricardo.
Developer tools/addons exist for FF that spoof whichever browser and OS version you want.
Chrome developers have the same needs, so it should exist there as well.
I know and have been contemplating getting a 2023 M2 for 460 Euros on Refurbed, but I am really loath to retire my 2012.
I bought it in CH way back and took it to Malta on the bike stuffed in the saddlebag then brought it back to DE where it sits under the telly which I use as a second monitor.
It´s part of the family.
