What to bring? What to just buy in Switzerland?

Only?

Usually it's a month's salary.

Tom

Be careful as this "lump sum" could well be taxable.

Correct, that lump sum is taxable!

That's how far I pushed it... but thanks for the tip! I'm heading for the mall right now

Totally agree. About 40 years ago, "nordic bedding," first just a fad, became popular, and decades later, normal top sheets, which had been the normal thing for many generations, began to disappear from the stores.

I hate sleeping with my feet outdoors -- well, sort of.

Not only for washing. You can also use it for serving your concoctions if you aren't having the entire Olympic Committee over for dinner. Only drawback: the Migros slow cooker doesn't have a timer.

No it wouldn't, but King size usually would.

Funny, we Swiss folks often think the same of American wall decoration. It's all a matter of taste. One's own always is best.

I, on the other hand, much prefer Swiss bedding.

Tom

I'd advise to bring enough of your favorite medicine; you won't find it here or it would be very expensive!

I think of (back) pain gel, hot and cold patch (i.e. ThermaCare Heat wraps).

No CVS pharmacy neither Walgreens here unfortunately ...

Welcome to Switzerland!

Totally agree with that. After Marmite, our visitors from the UK are always asked to bring Paracetamol and Ibuprofen!

Another thing to consider is time. If you have your stuff moved, you will be without it for 4-8 weeks while it is being shipped. If you have temp housing this might not be a problem. We had several things we didn't feel like we could live without (obviously small things, not furniture) that we brought in our suitcases.

On the flip side, if you buy everything here, that also takes time. Will you have a car or will you need to have everything delivered. If you buy stuff from IJEA you have to also put it all together or pay them to which costs a lot.

Several other people moved from my husband's company the same time we did. We were the only ones that chose to have our stuff moved - the rest took a lump sum to buy stuff. overall, I think our transition was much smother. And I know for a fact they spent far beyond the sum they were given.

Just something to consider in making the decision.

there is a cheap option for apple products, it is http://www.apfelkiste.ch/

the prices here in switzerland at the apple shop are sky high

I would also buy a stack of Birthday, Xmas, ++++Cars. They cost a fortune here and naturally most are in German. If you don't bring your PC maybe bring an English keyboard. Rip as many DVD's and CD as you can onto a hard disk so you can play them digitally (They cost a lot more here). Small electronic stuff here is cheep compared to most of Europe, most other things cost more. Personally I buy furniture at Pfister.ch

there will be sales in January... but I think pots are usually on discount during summer sales, not winter...

I guess whatever is light (e.g. electric toothbrush), just bring it..

towels should be on 50% discount in Manor, Coop city, and most other major department stores, same for linens (there is also a decent linen selection in Globus outlet close to Zurich)

pillows take up quite of volume... but you will probably get them there for cheaper... but I have no idea what quality level you are looking for (if cheap, ikea has lots of stuff, mid level - manor has nice stuff, if higher level- foxtown is an outlet shopping center with nice selection)

board games are very expensive in switzerland, definitely bring them

Tip! If you can, use space bags to package your pillows, linens, and clothes. Yes they will all be wrinkled on arrival but they will remain clean and dry, and probably not need washing. A life-saver for my business suits because I didn't have to spend a fortune getting them dry-cleaned here
