what to take along for dinner at a swiss family

I am invited for a dinner at a swiss familiy. can any one suggest what should I take along.....back in my country we take sweets or fruits.........please suggest.........

Among my peers it's pretty standard to bring a bottle of wine. Which the host will examine and then tuck away in the cellar .

We always take a nice bottle of red wine and flowers.

gherkins?

Damn you beat me to it.

Actually, congrats on getting invited to a Swiss house for dinner.

Flowers or a bottle of wine seems to be the usual thing here.

That said, if there is a tradition in your home country, say a particular kind of sweets to bring - and if you can get those in Switzerland - go for it! The Swiss enjoy learning about similar customs in other places. (If I had a franc for every time someone's asked me what is American English for "en guete"...)

Thankx.......ny special brand for wine..........

Try not to take back the same bottle they brought to yours....

Food

I would say nice bottle of red wine, flowers, ice-cream for the kids or something that is typically found in your country only

Definitely a small bunch of flowers and some expensive chocolates or biscuits from a local Patisserie. If you want to impress, bring something from your home country.

Wine is not looked upon favourably here. It is put in the cellar until they are desparate for a drink. You need at least two bottles for a dinner, and bringing two bottles looks insulting.

I would say that depends on the family Many like drinking wine and a good bottle of wine will be much appreciated. Two bottles are even more polite (it's the "correct" way of doing things but not many people do it) because one of the bottles could have a cork that breaks while opening, leaving little parts in the bottle... That having said it's more "Knigge" than real life practice.

"Konfekt" could also be nice, that's little sweets that you can buy in a box in a pastry shop.

Flowers are always welcome. Not a massive bouquet but a little bunch of flowers.

If they have children you could also bring a little something for the children, very often chocolate.

Among friends it's also common to ask if you can bring along / provide anything, dessert very often.

Hope that helps!

Have you thought of Aromat?

(a nice bottle of wine is usually appreciated)

Excellent idea!

If someone brought Aromat to my dinner invitation I would be insulted

OK, how about an airfreshener?

+1

I would combine some kind of tradition from your home + what they are expecting (e.g. wine), that way they have the wine to cling to for comfort.

Don't forget to arrive on time and leave on time.

pmsl first you insult my cooking, and now you say my home smells

soap? (I'm running out of options here...)
