Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

We have a Subaru Outback 3.0R. it is big and strong enough. On a very snowy highway last time, we passed other cars like they were standing.

Maybe people were driving more cautiously than you?

The difference is not so great as people think just as an example:

VW Touareg

4wd, jeepy thing or car.

Jeepy thing: Landcruiser, Volvo XC90

Car: without doubt - Volvo XC70, I've just done the research between the A6 allroad and the Volvo, and I so wanted the Audi but the Volvo is an awesome tool... roll on bonus time

But in truth why do you want a 4x4? Unless your from Kensington or planing to go off road, a decent front wheel drive, with snow tyres will be perfectly adequate. I ski every weekend in the season and have only needed chains once in the last 2 years.

Land Rover, Land Cruiser....sorry for hijacking this for a brief moment, but we were thinking about buying an old one of either for up in the mountains (and yes, the 8 or 9 or 100-seater, whatever. Big.) We need it because we need to haul some stuff around and the weather is, well, mountainy. Everyone my husband has spoken to about it says they are both nothing but trouble and break down frequently. Is this actually true??

A couple of things you might want to consider:

- Swiss roads are narrow, parking lots are small and scarce, especially in bigger cities. Driving an SUV in a city IS a problem. I've had a Ford Maverick for a while and parking with one of those things is close to impossible here.

- Drivers of cars with a high CO2 output will be hit by additional taxes very soon

- SUVs are insanely expensive. Just because your company leases it for you doesn't mean you'll get it for free - you get taxed for company cars that are used for private purposes. If the car is used solely by you, taxes are going to be high - you might want to get something more reasonable.

Of course, there are reasons to get an SUV - if you live on a farm, if you build a house and need to haul lots of stuff etc. But living in a city apartment and driving an SUV just don't go together here. Doesn't help the integration process, either, if your neighbors hate you for your car.

The best 4WD?

A Lamborghini.

Ok so it doesn't have so many seats, who cares

Anyone konws about BMW X1? it seems not that big, so easy to park. CO2 footprint is not that bad, not as bad as X5 for sure.

and it is just like a normal BM, but 4WD. and half of the X5 price...worth buying?

My favourite, if you are looking for a family vehicle that can expand seating easily to 7 is the Land Rover Discovery. I have had 2 of them and they are fantastic both on and off road. I agree that the Land Cruiser is also a great car!

The Steyr Puch, if you like to get your hands a bit dirty

Ask if you can have the money and buy a second hand car. Pocket the (huge) difference. Sometimes a company will allow this route; it saves everyone hassle. Buy a decent motor and you won't be hit too hard by servicing and repairs: there's a garage on every corner, here.

Dunno what you want a 4x4 for, but the only benefits on tarmac are generally best appreciated in sporty cars, not fambly cars. If prestige has something to do with it, the World and his Frau drive the X5 or A6 here. Not that impressed, myself... I like Pandas or Subarus...

The best 4WD car........the one you like the look of, that you can afford and sounds a good deal to you !

At the end of the day and if you really need a 4WD which i seriously doubt (i live at 1000m altitude and have never needed a 4WD car) you need to get one you like as otherwise you'll never be happy. If you want reliability go for a Landcruiser, if you want something more fancy maybe an XC90 or a Subaru.

You pay a lot in additional purchase and running costs for something that you may possibly need 3 or 4 times a year in reality. The rest of the time normal cars with snow tyres work just fine, the roads are regularly cleared.

I went throught the same decision process.

First, remember Switzerland is officially a mountain country. Roads are NOT straight. So you need something that grips that road and definitely does not roll. Another thing already mentioned, roads are small, so you need something that is fairly compact. The 4X4 that fits this best is the Subary Forester. Switzerland loves it. In fact, Switzerland loves all subarus - the legacy, etc.

We were looking for a good deal on a second-hand car that DOES NOT BREAK DOWN. I eventually short-listed the Toyota Rav4, Subary Forester, Nissan and Huyndai Santa Fe.

So I went for Huyndai because they consume gas more than others and for that reason they are much cheaper.

By the way, gas costs around 1 Euro per litre here, around 1.60 Swiss francs. So consumption is definitely an issue. We use it only for the week-end so that is all right. Also, I plan to keep it until it dies.

Hope this helps

Take care

Whoever told you that knew nothing.

Over 2/3 of Defenders and series are still being driven on the roads.

They are not the best 4x4 off road cars because they break down the first time you take them into the mud.

Landcruiser - case closed

There was a study that found that the Jeep Wrangler was the most environmentally friendly car in the world considering everything (the cars has been designed a long time ago, simple to assemble so not much energy goes into producing the car, consumers keep their Wranglers for a long time etc... etc...).

The hybrids did not fare very well (the lithium is mined in Bolivia, sent to China and made into batteries, batteries are sent to Japan, car is assembled in shipped across the world).

...I'd have a look at the bigger Lexus truck or a Lincoln Navigator.

We have a Nissan Qashqai which was reasonably priced, reasonable to insure and handles snow a lot better than a BMW 4x4. The fuel economy is really good and you can drive it in 2WD or 4WD. Plus, it isn't too big to park in those tiny supermarket spaces. I've never driven a Nissan before but I'd highly recommend it now.

How do you even manage to drive into an underground car park with a Land Cruiser? Even the main roads are narrow here!
