What's the best equivalent in Switzerland to Spam (the luncheon meat)?

argus, not sure if you've found an alternative but we like the brand "Ma Ling". mum uses it back home and I grew up on that brand. Easily available from Lien Hwa Asian supermarket at wiedikon.

My favourite is to chop it up and add it as part of my fried rice, together with some chinese sausages and eggs.

Thanks, but Tulip brand is not very good in texture and taste.

I have since found that the little tubs (with peel-off foil top) of Malbuner Delikatessen (3 different 'flavours') found in Migros are an acceptable substitute but I seldom eat luncheon meat nowadays.

P.S. Summerrain, yes, Ma Ling is good. Will check it out the next time I'm in Zurich. Thanks.

Chinese sausage! I have been looking for it. Can you get that in Lian Hua as well? I have heard about Lian Hua but have never been there because driving in Zurich is such a hassle with the never ending road works. We have not been to NAM for more than a year because of that.

Now I am really confused. In a previous thread about Fleischkaese, I was hauled over the coals for suggesting that it was otherwise known as Meat Cheese ...

It is a name that doesn't translate well. I first thought is was some kind of meat and cheese combination.

I'm sure I've seen Spam in Orell Fuessli. I have definitely seen it recently somewhere on Bahnhofstrasse, but can't exactly remember where

Mmm, Spam fritters - gorgeous and so healthy

Is, what you mean, THIS

or THIS

Such stuff was (most likely still is) a central part of the Emergency Ration (picnic ration) of the Swiss Army. It among the soldiers has a politically most incorrect name, and is generally rather detested. Good kitchen chiefs at times collect the stuff and mix it into sauces, as for example a combination of it with tomato sauce (and an assortment of spices) results in a kind of Bolognese sauce. No retailer however will use the "name" of "Gschtampfte Juud" unless eager to earn the wrath of the JWC !

Similar but not the same. And more expensive.

No, no, the Lyoner-Wurst is a nice delicacy, and quite good with some spicy sort of Dijon-mustard. And it is not particularily fat, possibly rather the contrary of it.

Spam, Lyoner, Fleischkäse, etc. are all in the ballpark of 30% fat. Lyoner just doesn't seem as greasy because it's such a fine grind.

Here is the interesting point.

Planthead said this on 4 Jan 2008, you joined in May 2009, so must have been reprimanded after this post, and by different people, with different opinions.

The wonders of the internet, where nothing is ever laid to rest...

Yeap, it is also available in Lien Hwa as well

PS: you've been missing out!!!

Over here it's called "singe" or monkey meat. What do they call it on the Swiss German side?

"Gschtampfte Juud"
