What's with todays youth?

Why can't they wear a normal pair of pants?

Why are they so stupid, molesting people on the road?

What is the language they're speaking (cause it *ing isn't Swiss German)?

Why are they playing rap bullshit on their ghetto blasters when they don't understand a single word of the lyrics?

Are these the folks our future?

you're now officially old

Well, the good news is, once you start off like that there is usually not a terrible lot of future left..

The same questions have been asked throught history about the next generation...

So yes u are old...

Time to get eaten by the lion, you are slowing the rest of the pack...

Is this an old post from 1989? I haven't seen a ghetto blaster in decades :P

Slowing them doing what? Vandalizing trains and vomiting on the street?

Damn it I'm not THAT old ;-)

You talking about youth or EF'ers after Friday night drinks?

The only thing wrong with today's youth is bad parents and role models.

Ok, as it happens, I am a member of the Zurich museum & literature society ( http://www.museumsgesellschaft.ch/ ). In the library, there is a lovely book on "Zürich in 1968". I just skipped through it and looking at the pictures I would call todays youth boring, conservative and adapted - mainly trying to get a career in banking and more interested in sports cars and luxuries... but that is just me.

I am not old either, but I guess I would have had fun in 68...

Yes, it is old people's fault.

I would have had more fun a year later

I was at a glitzy jet set party in Zurich recently, full of the usual suspects and TV faces. Around midnight I was so bored I decided to head home to the terrific book next to my bed and radio Swiss Jazz.

Middle age doesn't creep: it's an invisible happy slapper which runs off with your energy, too.

The cigarette afterwards is the best bit these days.

I also find it peculiar and a bit sad the number of obviously well-off teens here (the kind who play the aforementioned rap bullshit you refer to) who dress up as if they think they're Eminem wearing the kind of gear only kids from rough ghettos & neighbourhoods bother to wear these days in the States. They seem to spend the day skulking around railway platforms or outside Migros and Coop. Conversely the average US teen now seems to dress much smarter than they did 15 years ago.

It would be fun to scoop up all these wannabes and send them off to a boot-camp in the Detroit projects or South Central LA and see if they, or at least those still standing, still aspire to that lifestyle after living a week of it.

My dad's generation fought for more personal freedom in 1968. They wanted to grow long hair and listen to the Beatles. It was about breaking free. They made a point .

Today's 13 year old gangsters don't! They're binge drinking and willingly destroying property of others, just out of boredom.

be careful what you wish / fight for, you might just get it

"I used to be With IT. But then they changed what IT was. Now what I'm with isn't IT, and what's IT seems scary and wierd."

Kids of today are just like kids of the past. The only difference is more disposable income and more toys (poor now is nothing like poor from pre-WW2).

Here's a snippet of Robert Mitchum's bio:

From wikipedia

If you talk to enough old people or read up you'll find that there were always kids up to no good and pissing off the adults. There is no 'good old days'.

The big difference is that Robert Mitchum's misspent youth must have been character-building and taught him a few of lifes lessons. Hanging around outside Migros with trousers that barely reach above your ankles playing crap music just is not comparable.

There were plenty of long haired creeps then looking for an easy lay and an easy high , the love-loving hippies were easy targets. Most of those kids (hippies) grew out of that fad and into the next one, ending up in a 9-5 working for the 'man', just as they do today . The creeps probably stayed creeps.

I agree- but the point I meant to make but didn't was that there were plenty of no-good do-nothing kids in those days too. Getting expelled from schools and fighting and going to prison?! Some come out of it with character, some don't. I'm certain the adults observing Mitchum saw him as no better than the lazy Migros kids.

You read and looked at the pictures in a book, which probably highlighted the carefully selected best bots of the year, or era and decided it was better?

You could be right, just not in agreement with the criteria you cited.

Today's old timers are, what were called "Baby boomers" who enjoyed the post WW2 prosperity and steady economic growth. There were more jobs than people who could do them, hence the immigrations.

And once characteristic of these "Baby boomers" was, and still is, they are quite greedy and ambitious - also hard working. Too much focus on short sighted economic and financial prosperity (boom and bust economics vs one with stable and consistent growth), they clearly have missed out on how to bring up a sensible "next generation."

Not to forget the arrogant element either - "In our days things used to be blah blah blah much better than nowadays" "We did things in much better ways, hence we were so successful" - Whereas the truth is they were just riding a high tide, anybody willing to work could find work and anybody slightly with above average skills and initiative could go far in career.

Im born a few decades to late, would have loved to live in the real wild times....

All it is today is kids with a big mouth and in those days as a kid you would get a good smack around the head making you think twice. With todays mentality etc that isnt happening anymore and therefor they do not think twice and just do it.

Im no saint and have done my share of stupidity in society,

Heck a good night at the bar and I act like im 10 again......

Im sure our grandparents thought the same of us growing up....
