Wheelie bin cleaning

We have two wheelie bins outside (one for compostable stuff, and one for normal bags) - and they REEK.

Does anyone know of a wheelie bin cleaning service?

When I was in the UK, there was a truck that would come by, lift them up, pressure wash them and then set them back down...

Er, do you have a pressure washer?

Nope.... and not sure I would want the "goo" that's at the bottom of the wheelie bins on my driveway!

I reckon it would kick off warning of a biological weapon being released

Dump some all-purpose cleaner and a bucket of hot water in it; leave overnight; drain.

For the green bin - we deliberately cut our lavender the day after collection, so it stays in there for a week. Leaves it smelling nice for ages.

Your question piqued my interest, as this is common back home but I’ve not seen this service here. A quick google shows several listings in the greater Zürich area, such as (random listings, no personal experience):

https://umweltservice.ch/service/containerreinigung/

(Limited coverage area for private customers)

https://www.oecogreen.ch

The first gives a price of CHF 52 for a 2 wheel container. I’ve only skimmed the site, however, may be more to it than that.

Anyway, there do indeed seem to be such service companies out there.

Or buy a new one from Landi at CHF39.55!

CHF 59.95 for the version I have, but that is a very good point. Then again, that still leaves a smelly wheelie bin to dispose of!

Maybe I can strap it to the roof bars and recycle it...

We periodically hose down our bins (don't have a power washer but the twist-nozzle on the hose outlet delivers sufficient squirt), however I've read tips that people put a couple of handfuls of cheap cat litter at the bottom of their bin bags to absorb any bin-juice before it escapes the bag.

The smell comes from a lack of oxygen. You could try drilling some holes in the green bin( I am just addicted to drilling holes) If you hose it out onto the garden or lawn it will act as fertiliser. Any smell should dissipate fairly quickly - maybe best to do when the neighbours are on holiday.

That's darkly hilarious that a new bin costs less than the cleaning service for the old bin.

Last week I had to gird my loins and clean our 'household' bin that was home to pretty large fly creche at the bottom

But.. I'm lucky to have a drive and a drain so was all done in 5 minutes. Anyway, it's a horrible job and if you have the cash.. then help the local economy !
