So my question is -- what should I specify as our official deregistration date? Aug 31? Or does the deregistration date automatically become my final work date (July 31)? If it's the latter, can we still remain in the country after our deregistration date and/or come and go, as if we were tourists?
My wife and I are US citizens and are leaving Switzerland this summer and moving to a non-EU country. I will be stopping my job here as of July 31, and I will be immediately leaving the country to start my next job, but my wife would ideally like to stay until Aug 31 (our B permits are valid until next year). During August I will probably come back to Switzerland at least once to help clear out the apartment.
Depends if your permit is tied to your employer or is an open one. If it’s tied then it effectively becomes invalid once the job ends and you can only be here as tourists for another 90 days. If it’s an open B then you can decide when you want to deregister - 31st August would work in that case.

Of course you may go to local authorities during July, notify them about your leave date in the future, get a deregistration confirmation from them dated in the future (Aug 31), and then start ending contracts like health insurance, phone, etc.
Deregistration date is the day you cross the Swiss border to leave. If you still have to come back to clean the apartment or any other stuff, notify the local authorities of the final leave date.
