Where buy wasabi?

Hi all,

I love maki and sushi, but I have just run out of the wasabi powder that I brought with me from abroad when I moved here.

Do you now any easy way of getting hold of some in the Zurich area or a Swiss online shop, or do I have to import it?

(The Blue Dragon wasabi is just regular horseradish with green food colouring and the Saitaku wasabi sauce from Migros just tastes of mayo )

Just had maki without the "green gold" and I missed the kick....

almost all wasabi sold anywhere is not true wasabi

There's a Japanese food shop on Schaffhauserstrasse between the Guggachstr. and Milchbuck stops... can't remember the name, but I went there when I needed panko and I bet they'll have something closer to what you need.

I found some of the real stuff in Lustenau for about the same price as uncut cocaine.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some posts / threads regarding Asian markets in Zürich.

Meanwhile, I think I've seen wasabi at Manor, possibly even multiple brands. I *know* they have some authentic stuff included in their pre-made sushi plates at the Manor at St. Jakob's (Mall?) so I imagine they'd sell what they include. Perhaps try at a local Manor.

Also, Globus here in Basel sells sushi as well.. your local Globus may be a good place to look for some wasabi.

At either Manor or Globus, you may need to ask at the fresh fish counter if you don't see the wasabi readily displayed.

Your comment made he think of this

Here is the address:

Schaffhauserstrasse 120, 8057 Zürich

You will definitely find wasabi in there.

I had that and it cleaned my sinuses out very well. I want some of the real stuff now (ok tomorrow - where in Basel?) !

"just horseradish"

ah, you make me so proud of my alma mater. >tear<

Yep, but it ́s Oh so good. The wasabi I mean.

Thanks a lot, I ́ll give that a try!!!!!

Manor, Globus and occasionally Coop carry pre-made sushi plates, the times I've seen it in Coop it was included in the "take away" case where they've got sandwiches and salads and whatnot.

Also, there are at least two or three restaurants I've seen sushi advertised "downtown" in Basel... I tend to get off the 36 Bus at Fischmarkt and walk from there up past Barfüsserplatz so I couldn't swear to exactly where the places were along that walk. :P

I know there is an actual "sushi restaurant" just a street up from (I want to say) Marktplatz... I've peeked at the menu but haven't been in yet, I don't remember being shocked at the prices but can not vouch for the quality.

Noon (off Bankverein) do Sushi plates. Again, I found the wasabi to be agreeably mind blowing. I'm just stunned by the idea that this stuff is "just green coloured mayonaise". I've found the Migros stuff to be as potent as what I've had in a couple of Basel Japanese restaurants - including the one on Freiestrasse. When it comes to scharf - I eat Habanero chillis for breakfast. So "bland" doesn't appear on my menu.

We make our own makis (I ́m the commi and my husband is the chef), so I don ́t want to buy the whole meal . We aren ́t brilliant at it, but anyway...it ́s fun! Try it!

And, yes, the European horseradish is also very tasty (and strong), but it does not have the beautiful aroma that the japanese horseradish has... Thanks for all the responses and good tips!

I assume any asian shop will sell it; it's usually in smallish tubes, helpfully stamped "WASABI" in big letters as it's almost some kind of universal word, and isn't too expensive.

Check the sell-by dates on the box as, although I doubt it would ever go off, it loses its flavour.

Keep it in the fridge.

To back up rrs's point ...

I assume the tubes of stuff I buy (and what is usually given on the side when you order sushi to mix with soy sauce) is the fake stuff.

That's actually great to know. Can I place an order for some cocaine?

15 years later I went to my favourit Asian shop, you know it’s the kind which is full of people who speak some lovely sounding languages I don’t understand a word of - until a few years ago even the staff hardly spoke German or English but that changed. I bought Wasabi in a tube. I thought. But when I came home …

1.6% Wasabi and it’s not even the first thing listed. I’m not even sure if I should sample that?!

Seems to me going straight for - pure - horseradish is a better idea.
