Where can i buy a dressmakers dummy?

Can anybody recommend where I can buy (new or second hand) a dress makers dummy? I have a few items of clothing that need altering, but without a mannequin, I`m finding it too hard.

I live in Montreux (VD) but I`ve not found any shops that sell them. Ideally I need an adjustable dummy in a UK size 12 (i think 38 european) with a bust up to HH.

Many thanks in advance.

I use one that does not adjust. You can ask around in shops, we got mine in a shop that upgraded. I also have seen them in flee markets, try going to Geneva this Wednesday or Saturday, Plainpalais. I have seen the adjustable ones, but it is usually just the bust part. My doll is a standard 38, but since I am 34-36 it does work as well. If you want, though, pop over on Sunday (Friday) and use mine? I have sewing machines. Or, you can prestitch and measure here, finish at home. That thing makes sewing ultimately way way easier. www.ricardo.ch might have some too.

thanks for the offer... as i'm a novice seamstress; i wont embarrass myself by showing you my handiwork!

the main problem i have is that i have a big bust and all too often have had to have clothes altered, so i thought i'd try it myself.

I will have a scout aroundon ricardo, but i'm not a great one for buying online, so ideally, i'd prefer to go to a shop. (failing which, i may take you up on your kind offer!)

so if anyone else has any suggestions i'm all ears.

thanks.

what you're looking for?

In Germany, when people refer to a "dummy", they usually mean "crash test dummy" ;-)

sort of.. but without the face, arms and legs. those types of mannequins (dummys) are more suited to displaying clothes, where as i am looking for just the torso (on a stand) usually fabric covered, so it's easier to pin clothes onto, and alter as necessary.

maybe someone knows the word for what i'm looking for in french??

I think it's called a "mannequin de tailleur", or possibly a "mannequin de couturiè€re" or "de couture".

Ah, so it's basically such a one:

According to leo, the french word is just "mannequin".

You can search google for it, limiting results to .ch.

Unfortunately (but rather unsurprisingly if you know a bit of French), mannequin means both (the one in the window and the dress form), so you will have to click through a lot of stuff that is not what you want...

The term in French in Switzerland is bustes-tailleur. Here are two websites that sell them in the German part:

http://www.buesten.ch/

If you do order from one of these companies, I would be interested in hearing how it went. I'm thinking of getting one too.

There's a dress store in Belp (Bern) that is closing down (I think) and they have such a mannequin in the window for sale. It was a pretty expensive store, and the last i saw, the mannequin was CHF 250. It was there a couple of days ago, and the store is called Pierre Baumann

here is the website - I don't know if it's what you want, or if it's too expensive, but it might be worth it to contact them. They are right across from the Belp Bahnhof
