Where can I buy Fresh Horseradish ?

Hi there, I use the paste or jar of the hot Horseradish but have a recipe that advises freshly grated Horse Radish

Do they sell it here in CH (im in Lugano) if so whats the name in Italian if possible ( ? rafano) and any idea where to buy

thanks in advance

It is rafano and near Basel (which is no help) it is pretty easy to find In France. Best get a picture so you know what it looks like. I didn't know until I googled it last year.

The grocery store.

Rafano in Italian, Merrrettich in German, raifort French.

It is a root.

what's the story with fresh horseradish in switzerland?

i never really considered to make my own horseradish sauce before. but i was just thinking about it and realized that i did not even know what raw horseradish looks like. it's meerrettich in german. a google search on meerrettich frisch schweiz did not turn up much. although i got plenty of horseradish sauce, horseradish cheese, horseradish foam, horseradish cream, horseradish surprise etc

are shops and markets actually selling fresh horseradish? i was thinking horseradish omelette might have a good kick (and recipes are already out there - http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ho...omelette_81744 )

Fresh horseradish is readily available in all the grocery stores here.

I prefer horseradish cream sauce already made. Lekker finger licking good with fried sausages.

Thanks, but googling on Coop and Migros showed no fresh horseradish. And they normally have more produce than any smaller store.

I buy it fresh in any Migros here. I'm sure they'll have it in Lugano too.

not hot enough

OK thanks. Although I never consciously saw it (and I do look through the Migros produce), I guess I was overlooking it. If it's in Winterthur, I would guess also in big Migros Zürich so I will take a look. How do you put horseradish in recipes - as horseradish sauce, or something else? I am interested to try some recipes because I like horseradish sauce...

True. If you skip the cream part though, it will be burning your taste buds hot. If that's not good enough then I would suggest a wasabi used for sushi.

I buy it (fresh root) at Coop in Luino.

At my local Migros it can be found in the refrigerated vegetable & herb section.

Somewhere near the Swiss chard, Herbs, Mushrooms, etc...

If one has a piece of fresh root, a small piece can be planted - and you`ll have fresh Horseradish free for the rest of your life.

Just make sure that wherever you plant it - is where it`s going to STAY - because, like Comfrey, it`s hard to get rid of. The smallest littlest piece of root will just keep growing.

All you have to do is dig down a bit to the root and cut off a piece. You cannot harm this plant, it`s more hardy than you!

You can buy that at more or less every larger Migros or Coop, at least a few months out of the year. I buy it all the time. It's where all the fresh produce is.

It's indeed at the same place with the herbs. Last year I was looking high and low but couldn't find it. Turns out our Migros (Zug Metalli) doesn't have it every day so it's worthwhile to ask your grocer. Then I went to the Coop in Baar and found it almost immediately. A colleague also suggested going to a Reformhaus type of shop to get it.

I like to grate it fresh as well. The ready made Meerrettichschaum doesn't taste as good and is too stiff for my liking. Here's a great recipe for horseradish cream from ChefSteps.

OK ?

you peeled them before taking the picture
