It is rafano and near Basel (which is no help) it is pretty easy to find In France. Best get a picture so you know what it looks like. I didn't know until I googled it last year.
what's the story with fresh horseradish in switzerland?
i never really considered to make my own horseradish sauce before. but i was just thinking about it and realized that i did not even know what raw horseradish looks like. it's meerrettich in german. a google search on meerrettich frisch schweiz did not turn up much. although i got plenty of horseradish sauce, horseradish cheese, horseradish foam, horseradish cream, horseradish surprise etc
OK thanks. Although I never consciously saw it (and I do look through the Migros produce), I guess I was overlooking it. If it's in Winterthur, I would guess also in big Migros Zürich so I will take a look. How do you put horseradish in recipes - as horseradish sauce, or something else? I am interested to try some recipes because I like horseradish sauce...
True. If you skip the cream part though, it will be burning your taste buds hot. If that's not good enough then I would suggest a wasabi used for sushi.
If one has a piece of fresh root, a small piece can be planted - and you`ll have fresh Horseradish free for the rest of your life.
Just make sure that wherever you plant it - is where it`s going to STAY - because, like Comfrey, it`s hard to get rid of. The smallest littlest piece of root will just keep growing.
All you have to do is dig down a bit to the root and cut off a piece. You cannot harm this plant, it`s more hardy than you!
You can buy that at more or less every larger Migros or Coop, at least a few months out of the year. I buy it all the time. It's where all the fresh produce is.
It's indeed at the same place with the herbs. Last year I was looking high and low but couldn't find it. Turns out our Migros (Zug Metalli) doesn't have it every day so it's worthwhile to ask your grocer. Then I went to the Coop in Baar and found it almost immediately. A colleague also suggested going to a Reformhaus type of shop to get it.
I like to grate it fresh as well. The ready made Meerrettichschaum doesn't taste as good and is too stiff for my liking. Here's a great recipe for horseradish cream from ChefSteps.
