Where can I find pinhead oatmeal??

Does anyone know where I can buy pinhead oatmeal for making christmas stuffing or oatcakes? I am not sure if that is the correct name for it either bu that is what we call it at home, where we use it a lot. I have tried Migros and Coop but no joy..any ideas?

Apparently pinhead oatmeal is also known as steel cut oats. At least according to google. Who knew? Not me for sure.

My guess is that britshop.ch might be a source, but also Globus or Jelmoli. And presumably someone with a better knowledge of oats will be along shortly to give you other options. You can buy 50lbs of it on amazon.com for $65, but I don't think they'll ship it here. Hope you find some. I bought some regular old oatmeal in the coop, but I don't know if these are steel cut or pinhead or equivalent.

Oats are Haferflocken, Hafermehl

Surely you just need to grind some standard Haferflocken down a bit, and stop before it turns to dust.

I'd be interested as well, it makes a great winter breakfast!!

I have some haferflocken but they are rolled oats (for the likes of porridge or oat biscuits). I also found some haferflocken gemahlen but its just too fine. Its not the same as normal oats and ground down a bit, its completely different, they are almost small hard cubes (granted quite small) and we use it for stuffing/scurly and more traditionally with salt as porridge. Thanks for info but am hoping someone native out there knows what the heck I am on about.

I have a part bag in my cupboard at Basel - how much do you need? I am heading back to Scotland on wednesday so can restock.

Thats very kind of you but we would like to have some by 28th, its no big deal but would just be nice to have the whole traditional cremborium when we have my boyfriends family round. Did you bring yours from Scotland or did you buy it here? If so where and what is the name of it in German? My swiss boyfriend (who is a chef incidentally and worked in Scotland for 2 years) has no idea what I am talking about.

I brought it over. We go to Scotland every 2 or 3 weeks so its easy to do some of my shopping over there. Best of both worlds.

But there are so many whole grains here - even in the grocery stores - so if you keep asking you may find it.

Oh my I am so envious.

Hello,

I think what the closest to what you are looking for would be called Haferschrot.

Ask in any decent sized Health shop/Reformhaus, they will almost certainly have it.

Otherwise you could buy the pure oats and they will be able to turn it into Schrot for you. I think it won't be quite the same that way, but closer than anything else.

If you happen to have the good fortune to own, or know someone with a grain mill, well then you could probably do it yourself.

Still, I'd take a look in the health foods shop, I'm sure they will have it.

Wishing you a wonderful Hogmanay time.

I just came a cross a German/English forum and someone asked this question there. They were recommended to look for kernel oatmeal or kernige haferflocken in the supermarket.
