Where can I find the main shutoff water valve?

Hi peeps!

Not sure if its called " shutoff water valve" in english to be completely honest..

I want to change qué tap in the bathroom and I cannot find the main tap to close the water before I get down to work. Would you know where this is usually located?

It’s called a stop cock, and yours will depend on what type of accommodation you live in. Mine is in the technical room.

Cheers, I live in the second floor of an apartment building from 1920, although has been renovated.

I've seen big stop cock where the "cave" and the laundry room are but not sure if there is where all the individual ones are located..

There may not be individual ones (we don't have them), and you will need permission to close the main one.

i've done it in a couple of bathrooms, and I found them hidden either

1- behind little silver caps (screw them off) on the pipe going directly to the tap (if pipe is visible)

2- Behind big round silver caps installed on the tiling below the sink.

in both cases a small brass fitting that you screw with a flat head screwdriver to turn off the water.

Same as above - looked and looked and looked for one in the kitchen, then the landlord dropped in to show me that it was under a silver cap on the pipe....

The ones in my workplace are also under a cover and you need a screwdriver to adjust them.

The ones in my home country are generally full-turn tap handles - impossible to miss!

And in our basement, the tap and pipes are so complex, I would certainly not touch them !

Sometimes they hide behind a metal plate on the wall somewhere.
