I recently moved to Basel from California (the land of In n' Out Burger) where I started my addiction to 'gourmet burgers'
Does anybody know where one can go to get a good hamburger (and I don't mean McDonalds or BK) in BASEL?....I really miss a good double double with animal style fries (those who have been to an In n' Out will get it)
Not to hijack the thread but I'd like to know the same thing for Zurich. I've had a burger at a few places (even one in Niederdorfstrasse which someone recommended to me) and sorry to say, they all taste like crap, I think they didn't use real beef or mixed beef for the burger itself. I had come to the conclusion that either there is just no culture for hamburgers here or my price range is too low to afford the places actually offering good burgers. Nowadays I usually just buy rindfleisch in the store and make my own.
In Basel I would recommend the Burgers at eoipso. They only have one kind a month but every single one I have tried was really good. It comes with an interesting side and the quality of the meat is great. The price is that of a gourmet burger, though, around CHF18, if my memory doesn't fail me.
The Zurich Park Hyatt serves a great burger, but it is VERY pricey. What about the Outback or the Argentinian steak house in Zurich? Do they serve a burger? If so, is it any good?
To make them at home, you should probably get your beef freshly ground from a butcher. I think there is a thread somewhere with best recipes and sources for meat.
Peace Foods in do brilliant home made burgers. A bit far to travel from Basel but they have locations close to Zurich. http://www.peace-foods.ch/index.php
I like the burgers at Papa Joe's. I don't know how they compare to In 'n Out's though. There's a diner opposite Burger King near Barfusserplatz - don't know if the burgers are any good.
Because Peace foods have a small concession in Bider & Tanner bookshop (complete with freezer) and you can order from the shop and they will bring them for free to Basel when they do the fortnightly stock up of the concession shelves.
The Restaurant Aeschenplatz (known locally as the "Hammering Man") does burger and fries type stuff - and they're pretty good as far as I can remember.
I once saw Marcel Ospel dining there many years ago.
