We've been here a year now and the Burger situation is still pretty dire.
Went to Union Diner off Steinenvorstadt for the 4th time and the burgers are really really average. Nothing to write home about.
Their other branch in Kleine Basel, which has a different menu, seems to be a little bit better, but still not the usual Five Guys/In-N-Out or Shake Shack.
The buns are all wrong. Where's the brioche buns? Potato buns? They're all stick standard rubbish.
Most importantly the patties are too ground down so they taste like sausage meat. No char. No texture. Yuck!
Sadly I have to agree with someone else, Burger King is the best burger joint in town. *sigh*
It's got a bunch of us thinking. It maybe time to open up a proper burger joint in Basel?
We're experimenting with some ideas. Proper burger patties not ground down to the nth degree, with amazing buns, twice/three times cooked chips and all.
Its about keeping it simple ala Five Guys/In-N-Out or Shake Shack
What are people's view on this? Do you think there is a market for another, a PROPER, burger joint in town?
Sure there is (and by the way, I wouldn't rate In'N'Out as a good burger joint -- but each to their own). I looked at this too, in an extended moment of self-belief and a desire to bring the downright awesomeness that is the Aussie milk bar burger to a larger, appreciative audience. I did some basic sums for a store producing really great burgers (try a milk bar burger one day and you'll understand), and it's a definite goer. If you can convince punters to part with upwards of CHF 30 for a burger -- and that's before chips, drinks and dessert.
I've seen enough little burger places start up around here and disappear to know that it won't be easy to create a successful alternative to BK.
Having said all that, Mrs B Burgers has been around for a while and is pretty good (although very small, and she (actually often he) doesn't do chips). There's a van at SBB occasionally and they also have a stall in the Markthalle. Pretty decent burgers but not a patch on the full-blown Aussie milk bar burger.
I went to valentinos last week and i wouldn't go again. The burger looked processed catering pack bought and was fine grey mush.. eyeballs and arseholes meat grade?
Yes I like the Kebab at barfusserplatz opposite McDonalds. The place is gaudy plastic orange and looks like a meeting point for the local mafia but the kababs are good. And the staff always joke around with the customers that are alive.
Why not just make your own bugers and fries? Looks like this is the best option given the posts.
