Hi,
The water at our place is quite hard so we'd need to get some special salt for the dishwasher. Does anyone know where I can find these products? Not that I spent ages looking for it but I didn't see anything obvious in Coop/Migros etc.
Interestingly there's this product on the German Finish website (Spezialsalz für Geschirspüler http://www.finish.de/finish-special-dishwasher-salt.php ) but the same product is not there on the Swiss website of the same company... another Swiss peculiarity I should just get used to and not try to understand?
It's usually near the dish-washer powder. Look for 'Regeneriersalz'. Packet is same size and shape as normal salt.
Go to dishwashing powder aisle and look for ReoSal.
Aldi, Lidl, Denner will all stock it. Hope your machine doesn’t gobble it like mine does. I get through a box in less than two weeks. Probably the age of the machine as in our newer one at our previous rental property it lasted for a month before needing to be topped up.
You may have your setting too high.
Thanks Everyone - sounds like it's a simple affair. I guess they must have been out of stock at the stores where I looked for it (...or I must have been really blind)
ours is a brand new siemens so no experience yet with how much salt it consumes but will check the manual just in case there's a special setting or anything else to be aware of. Good point.
Thanks goodness I saw this thread and then realized I was doing something wrong past few weeks i.e. putting salt in the same compartment with dishwasher powder (tablets). Each time dishes were left with slightly white dirty deposit after wash This video explains it well...
My machine 'shows red' mostly just when I'm getting ready to go on holiday and really don't have time to fuss with that too! Once about every three or four months - but I always slosh a whole packet in. No idea if you are meant to, but we've had the machine for 15 years so it obviously doesn't give it indigestion or anything.
Looks like this (except Migros who carry their own brand mark)
Unfortunately, this machine doesn’t have one, it’s that old. The other one had a setting for adjusting for water hardness down by the powder and rinse aid containers, but this doesn’t have anything like that.
Same here, once the light tells me it wants more salt I just put a whole new 1k box worth’s in and I’m good for a few more days.
On older machines, there is sometimes a small screwable adjuster inside where the salt goes, once the lid is removed, or even on the inside side of the main compartment.
Thanks TiMow. I found it at the back of the machine in about the most awkward position it could be to reach it, but I managed to adjust it. It was set at 4; our water mmo/l is 3.2-4.2 so I’ve turned it down to three and a half. Does that sound about right? That was the level that the engineers set our other machines when they were installed at our old property and we’re only half a kilometre from there?
It’ll be interesting to see if it stretches the interval between dish salt top-ups. I only filled it up again last Thursday so will be easy to check.
