Where do you find campervans for sale in Switzerland?

We are interested in finding a used campervan somewhere in Switzerland. We are not too picky about the the age of the campervan, but more importantly the quality of interior, amount of miles, and desire to NOT have it break down on us half way up one of Switzerland's glorious passes. I have been searching my little heart out (not knowing much french) online but can't find much.

So my question: Does anyone know where I can find a used campervan...any dealers? Or would it be cheaper to go out of the country? (I hear Germany rocks on that account) Where should my search begin?

Also, if you're a Swiss citizen but aren't permanently residing in Switzerland, just visiting as a tourist, can you get plates and insurance on a vehicle?

I'd be grateful if someone could get me started off.

Thanks a lot for replying...though they are pretty pricey I have to say. I'd really like to find something used around 10,000 franc or less, but maybe that's wishful thinking in Switzerland where car prices seem a bit high

I'd love to get my hands on one of those old VW campervans, something like the Westfalia. We don't need much space...we actually live on a sailboat back home so we know how to downscale and live in tiny quarters. I'll keep looking

Here's another place I have seen: http://motorcaravan.ch/

Autoscout has some - and worth checking out. Prices remain strong though.

The TCS newsletter always has some advertised.

But if you are not resident here, I don't think you can have a registered vehicle here.

And for under 10,000 chf, very difficult I'm afraid. A very used old van may be possible but it would likely be in a very used state.

It's a royal PITA to import one ... been there, tried it, gave up. Lots of paperwork, inspections, $$$ involved.

Please, if you insist on driving one of those infernally slow contraptions on mountain passes, kindly use your mirrors and pull over regularly to allow the huge line of cars that will have undoubtedly built up behind you to pass.

I think this place, in Geneva, near the airport, only rents.. but it might be worth a phone call.... I have no clue really but as they are in the rental market I would think they speak english.

Thanks, you all are wonderful for sharing. Autoscout actually looks promising, some expensive and some reasonable...at least there are quite a few choices there at different price ranges.

And no worries AndrewD, I hate being stuck behind those awfully slow drivers but my boyfriend is Swiss, meaning all the anxious qualities of the Swiss driver , as well as being used to those passes.

Okay tomcat importing is out then, at least I know.

I think we will have to go speak with someone about registering a vehicle here. It's not a problem of citizenship but residency. My boyfriend is a citizen but resides in the US.

Anyhow, thanks all...I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Aargh! You beat me to it!

10k for any street legal ready to roll VW westfalia in switzerland is more than a little optimistic these days. the 50's-60's T1 models will be 50k, the late 60's - late 70's T2 vans will be upwards of 20k for a GOOD one and to find a nice 80's joker for 10k you'll need a lot of luck. all the best anyway.

let me know if your budget goes up.

Are you in the sales of VW campervans? We have been able to find some, needing a little work, generally with a good amount of miles on them for around 7 or 8k.

Our price range could vary from what I previously stated if it's a worth while buy. We're definitely not looking for something absolutely perfect and don't mind doing some alterations and interior restauration on the vehicle, but not a complete overhaul.

We did quite a bit of searching and are more leaning towards the larger campervan/camper mobile.

Truly I just don't understand how these things can go at such high prices when you can pick up a pretty good, large camper, thats very spacious, less miles, inspected and road ready for about 14K, some having heat, awnings, the whole nine yards. To be honest, your prices sound a bit higher than what we have actually found, soo....

i was talking about genuine original westfalia vw campers in excellent condition, not converted post office vans with an ikea sofa and sideboard thrown in the back.

i'm not trying to sell you anything but i do see a lot of people buying " reasonably priced" vw's "needing a little work" and in extreme cases ending up having to scrap them.

bon chance.

Well thanks! I hope we can find something halfway decent that's not gonna crap out on us!

And yea, I have seen some pretty crazy setups going on in some of those vans and sometimes they want a mint for em.

Ehh...I'm an adventurer at heart and a cup half full sort of gal. Maybe I've got my head in the clouds but I'm hoping I'll luck out with something good eventually.
