Where get camp stove fuel in Zurich?

Hey!

We arrive to Zurich on a sunday by plane and go to Engelberg by train on the same day. From there we hike the via alpina green trail westward. We plan to bring a gas camping stove with us but you are not allowed to take the fuel with you to the plane. Does anyone have a suggestion where we could find gas fuel (such as this https://www.transa.ch/p/msr-isopro-1...eselected=true ) from Zurich on sunday or from Engelberg on the following monday? All outdoor sports stores seem to be closed.

Transa is next to Zurich HB (main train station).

There's a campsite in Engelberg with a shop. Most campsite shops sell gas cylinders and are open Sunday/Monday.

But, they may not stock them, or the one you want. You could send them an email and ask.

Opps, of course it will be close on Sunday, sorry

I think one of the most depressing meals I ever had was in the French Alps many, many years ago when I was in the middle of nowhere and had run out of stove fuel.

My evening meal was cold porridge oats mixed with water with a heavy taste of chlorine from the puddle water I was using.

Having no stove fuel is not fun.

One solution is to carry a spare alcohol stove (they are cheap and light ~20g), then you can buy the feel in almost any supermarket.

All the camping stoves I've had used normal unleaded gasoline, the same you put into your car. It's so convenient, why use anything else?

Isn't there a problem taking the (empty) fuel containers on planes as they still contain fumes? I suppose you could clean and wash them out?

All my stoves have been unleaded or multifuel.

Boast about survival skills with unleaded gasoline somewhere else. There's an intersport and dozen more outdoor shops in Engelberg. Provided OP waits for 9h00 on Monday morning, gas can be bought.

PS List of outdoor equipment shops in Engelberg, some of them open at 8h00 on Monday https://www.engelberg.ch/en/winter/a...-rental/#/pois

Are you planning to cook large meals with it or more just for heating up small quantities? I bought one of these "Esbit cookers" years ago that uses "fuel cubes" to cook with. It takes about 10 minutes to heat water hot enough for coffee (for example). I believe you can also use small sticks / kindling to make the fire inside of it. It is rather small, though. The cup is only about 400 ml.

I have no idea if the fuel cubes / "fuel tablets" can be taken on a plane, though. But I think gas stations (which are open on Sundays) might also sell the fuel cubes sometimes. There are also other similar cookers on amazon that do not require gas. The Zurich airport actually has a grocery store that is open on Sundays and most likely sells the fuel cubes, actually.

I live a 15-minute train ride south of Zurich (in Greifensee). I doubt it's on your way to Engelberg, but if need be, you could order a gas cartridge and have it shipped to me and then pick it up on the way. (I'm actually surprised you can buy those online!). Or I could pick one up for you at the OBI (home improvement store) here. Send me a private message if you want to do that.

Anyways... Just a suggestion. I hope you can get something figured out.

Gas stations have the bit gas bottles (like for the BBQ at home) perhaps someone knows if they also sell the small bottles?

Gas stations are open on Sundays.

Thank you very much for the multiple replies.

We have a Trangia gas stove ( https://www.bergfreunde.fi/trangia-2...aasukeittimet/ ) which you can bring on the plane if it is cleaned of any fuel residues. The gas fuel cartridges are a mix of isobutane/propane and needs to have that particular adapter/valve. The fuel cubes seem like an interesting concept, although I wouldn't like to buy a new stove. For convenience we plan to eat dry-frozen meals such as this https://realoutdoorfood.com/products...urmat-bacalao/ to which you only need to add boiling water to the container. That way we dont have to deal with dirty dishes. We have breakfast included in the hotels we are staying on the way.

Of the various suggestions, https://www.quattrosport.ch/en/outdoor and https://www.4seasons-sport.ch/ seem pretty promising. I will probably ask contact them and ask if the sell the gas. I'm afraid the camping area place only sells large canisters https://www.eienwaeldli.ch/en . Could probably also ask if I could post order gas to our hotel in Engelberg.

If you are planning on using freeze dry foods (MRE's) why not use the no fuel heat bags to heat the water like this:
