That house is right on the main road. Hence the noise retaining wall.

Built in 1772.....

In Pfäffikon SZ Houses start at around 1.5 Million

The average salary in CH is ~6250 month. I don't think this salary is enough to buy, assuming through mortgage, a 1MM apartment (OP budget).

That being said, taxes is something you can't control whereas real estate costs at least you can try to save by to moving to a small place, increasing commuting time, etc.

I've seen this one. Would have bought it in a flash even though it needs renovation top to bottom, it's a great price for the area. But one should be aware that the house stands under Denkmalschutz, both exterior and interior.

Despite living in the area almost 20 years here, despite already being a good taxpayer in the canton, despite knowing a lot about historical renovation and having done it twice already (in the US), despite being a 'Landfrau' at heart, happy to continue farming traditions... getting approval from the Denkmalkommission isn't a walk in the park.

If only I were 10 years younger...

But it's a lovely property, the kind that rarely comes up in this part of the world. How I wish...

It even has "central heating", erm it means the old ceramic heater is in the center of the room.

Renovation? You mean entire destruction and rebuilding. No seriously, I love old properties, I think they have charms but that junk is far beyond renovation.

And the price, it really shows how insane the situation is, if anyone would consider that to be even remotely a good price.

And who has taken a picture of a old nail inside damaged wood plank???

The only nice thing about it is the land around, looks pretty and peaceful. The wood ruin in the middle, not so much.

Near where we live there are houses within the OP's budget. From the nearest train station it is 45 minutes to Zurich Hardbrücke with a direct train. But you have to get to the station and sadly the bus times don't coincide with the direct trains to Zurich during rush hour but only those to Baden and Bulach.

Home ownership often means compromising. One has to decide just where the limits are.

Love it too- and that very old nail is wonderful what is the building date?

Oops had missed it 1750s - quite modern then (our is 1587, rebuilt after fire in 1663).

Taking things into a different perspective, it's a beautiful nail and old wood.

Now, getting back to reality, would you pay 1'645'000 CHF for that???

This car is a wreck (an understatement), doesn't have ABS or airbags and is said to be worth, at auction 300-400,000 dollars.

People place value on this things they covet. That is their true value.

About that house, how many people:

1) can afford

2) really covet

3) are in the right context to purchase that house (size, location, etc...).

4) are not prefering a modern alternative

5) are confident to make the purchase in current economy

???

PS: nice car btw, the criminal who let it damaged that way should be hanged!!

I have been living in Langnau am Albis for two years and I think it is a very nice place to live.

Pros:

- Good connections from the Langnau-Gattikon station (20 minutes to Zurich HB by train, 10 minutes to Thalwil by bus)

- Wildnispark Zurich located within the village

- State of the art swimming pool and indoor tennis, squash and badminton courts

- lovely walkways by the sihl.

- Coop, Migros and Lidl located within the village

- Take a short train ride down to Sihlwald for a picnic / BBQ / see the vintage trains

Cons:

- A distinct lack of nice restaurants / Cafes in the village. We usually walk to KölliBeck in Gattikon for a bite to eat.

- Can be a bit quiet

About 16000 cars passed this building every day in 2016.

That would be a couple too many for my taste.

Ever thought about Rümlang? 10 minutes by bus to airport, 17 min by train to

ZH Hbf, 8000 somewhat friendly people. Excellent airplane watching included (ok with a little noise). Indoor swimming, all kinds of recreational things.

And boring (and still most likely too expensive for OP)

1 million will unlikely get you anything matching your criteria in Baden, Basel or St Gallen

*plus 500k investment and a year of your life required to get the house up to a habitable standard.

yes anywhere outside zürich is the living death

i used to live in schaffhausen and would recommend that. nice place to live. family friendly. much more affordable housing and a fast train into zurich.

if you want to stay in zh canton, you can buy just across the river in flurlingen which has low taxes and also close to neuhausen train station.
