Where to buy a decent non-stick saucepan/cooking set?

Well, in the end I got a Tefal set for £52 from Amazon (price has risen since then), I found a seller that shipped overseas and it only cost £11 for shipping http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tefal-5-Piec...2602366&sr=8-1

I expect to pay some customs charges obviously, but even so it's still very cheap for a good quality pan set.

Incidentally, I was at Conforama at the weekend too and got the Tefal Preference 28cm frying pan in the sale too for 44chf... it's £35 in the UK so decent price for Switzerland http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tefal-Prefer...602592&sr=8-14

No idea how I just put up with crappy pans for years and having to use oil... with the new pan (which is free of all the harmful stuff that nonstick is blamed for) and it cooks amazingly, nothing sticks, it cleans up in a cinch, and best of all I don't have to use any oil. So healthy!

So, had they sold all the 'leather sofas' by the time you arrived then?

Tefal coat in a normal pan is pretty pointless if you can cook.

Tefal is OK in frying pans.

The glass lids are also a waste of time compared to ordinary metal lids.

just make sure you use wooden spoon and implements in them or the tefal soon is damaged.

Eh?

The first part is down to opinion I guess, but I only use wood and plastic implements anyway.

A bit late for you Richdog but on the subject of nonstick pans. We bought Wedgewood NSPs from Volg with coupons a few years ago, I have to say they are the best NSPs I have used, I cook on a gas hob. There is not a scratch on them and I don't always use the proper tools.

Happy cooking!!

Yes but how often do you use them?

My experience is the same as Hat's. Have tried all sorts of non-stick pans of varying prices and quality over the years but none has lasted longer than 6-8 months.

So nowadays I regularly buy a Migros Budget non-stick frying pan every six months for 10Fr. and throw the old one out.

We just got rid of all our Teflon, PFOA, PTFE cookware when we recently found out that they can give off gases that could kill our little birdies, bam, just like that.

We just got a new set made by Silit, guaranteed safe, that are so non-stick, they put all else to shame. Very happy with how they cook and handle too. Bought ours at Loeb in Bern. Check it out:

.

Think she's referring to one of your other threads.

Oh, right. *shrugs*

If you know how to cook properly - i.e not blasting things at max - then you shouldn''t need non stick's period. Most things that are cooked in saucepans are liquid based & therefore require only the patience of a lower heat & a regular stir.

Even scrambled eggs are possible without sticking in steel/enamel pans as long as a nice gentle heat is applied combined with near constant stirring...plus your eggs will taste a 100 times better

My favourite saucepan by a country mile is my 24cm Le Creuset fondue pan that I use pretty much every day, but only a few times a year for actual fondue

I'd agree with you on that.

I have 3 non sticky tefal pans. 2 normals, 1 PRO.

All of them are burnt in the middle.

And yes, I know how to care, how to coat them with fat, how to use a non abrasive sponge (green ones are abrasive), and not using any metallic tools.

Possibilities: Tefal is no longer doing quality stuff;

Also it's possible that people don't see that because they use different pans, so it means using it less intensively would delay the damages.

For example, if someone is cooking only 1 time a day with the tefal and uses another one instead, that's 50% less use. It would add 1 year to the observation of the "damages" .

So it would seem that the tefal would last years, but actually it's very limited.

I'd also definitely go for your advice: buy any cheap pan, last a year and replace them.

Really last time I cashed a lot for a stupid PRO pan and it's already dead. And in my opinion I took a great care of it.

50 quid for five saucepans pans is hardly buying decent quality is it, even in the U.K?

That's bargain-basement. Expect to pay 50 quid at least for one half-decent pan that should last you a few years.

It amazes me that people spend so little on things that they use every day when 50 quid probably wouldn't buy you a computer game or something equally frivolous.

Wait a few months and we'll see if you still find it a good, long lasting investment as advertised.

oh, who said 50 quids??

Dude, you're linking someone else's post to mine-

I bought my 3 pans individually, and my PRO pan was definitely over 50quids, don't remember the other ones but they were not cheap either.

Bought 1 in Manor also.

Edit: the guy you are referring to has a "Tefal Essential" kit- totally different

You were complaining about Tefal, Richdog's just bought Tefal (for fifty quid). Guess the connecting word?

misconception?

Ok to clarify as you were quoting me:

My 3 pans were different, not part of any set.

Also they were not "Tefal Essential" but... forgot the name-

2 of them were medium/high quality and the "pro" was basically the most expensive of the range, easily over 50GBP for 1.

Anyway, despite "good care" (coating; careful washing with non abrasive sponge, no use of iron/metallic tools); they all get ruined withing a year maximum.

The only thing i'm not sure is that sometimes I use full heat (setting 6) after progressively warming (ie I put medium and minutes later I go full speed). Maybe it was an impact, or it's too hot or whatever-

So we agree that Tefal make terrible pans? Except Richdog paid a lot less for his than you did?

yes and no... I'm still wondering how it is possible or why my expensive pans are damaged so quickly.

I'm open to listen/admit any possible "Misuse" but really I think I was careful enough.

Or maybe "long lasting" implies a number of days, and you quickly reach "end of life" when you mostly use the same pan, let's say 280 days in the year.

Or they just good at advertising and they sell crap.

Oh yes, he did pay less than me- but we'll see how long they will last.

Hey I just read their FAQ again:

http://www.tefal.co.uk/tefal/Consume...173A4F91D9C%7D

Looks like I get my answer:

Can TEFAL pans be damaged by high temperature?

Yes. High temperature can burn food, producing stains and causing the pan to warp. In addition, overheating may result in a loss of non-stick performance. A moderate temperature is sufficient for cooking , because aluminium heats up evenly. Heating the pan to a very high temperature, with nothing in it, can cause damage.

So basically, I don't think I abused the "full heat" but I have used it enough times to remember.

Could be the reason of the damages.

So the super expensive pro does not even "protect" against that, I would wonder why bothering buying such a model vs an entry level with same properties.
