...and which link didn't help when you typed "Bacon" into the search engine ?

I stock dry cured back bacon at the Viadukt Markthalle made here by an English chef, he also makes English sausages which I have most of the time now.

I have seen it at some of the larger Coop's - Hinwil for example.

We used to buy online from Over The Rainbow (who have since changed their name I think) but postage became extreme - almost cheaper to fly back to the UK!

Oh, and fwiw you do learn to live witout it.

Eat some bacon flavoured Frazzles (the crisps)

Thanks a lot Grumpy and Greys !

I have found bacon of good quality at the market held at Burkiplatz on Tuesday and Friday mornings. It's at one of the meat vendors that is usually located along the Burkliplatz side of the market. I have also purchased at Coop but found the quality a bit low - the bacon was quite thin... Hope this helps.

Fei, you might want to tell us a bit more about what exactly you want to find. The word bacon covers a pretty wide range of different products. Many of them can be found in Switzerland.

Is it green bacon, air dried bacon, smoked bacon? Is it streaky bacon (belly bacon), middle bacon, back bacon, gammon, hock or collar bacon? Do you need it in thick chunks or sliced, and if the latter, how thin? Do you want to fry it, boil it, grill it, eat it as it is or something else?

Besides these basics, there are many specialties, such as pancetta, Kentucky smoked bacon, hickory bacon, guancale and the like. Bacon is a whole world to some people.

As for streaky bacon, the CoOp and Migros do a budget brand of Bratspek in large packets for around 6 francs. It's great cooked crispy for sandwiches. One pack will last me a week of sandwiches.

You mean a day's worth of sandwiches, right?

But seriously, this thread puzzled me -- Switzerland has tons of bacon. Admittedly, their breakfast bacon (streaky) isn't the best, as it lacks that touch of sweetness that a great bacon has. But you can get great bacon for cooking in big chunks, or diced, or whatever. And then there are the bacons here that are to be eaten uncooked (Bauernspeck, etc.), some of whch are f••cking delicious, albeit not in any way as a substitute.

Bought some decent bacon from the Globus two weeks ago...

"Leichgeraucht" ..... from Migros. Tasty, salty, makes the eggs taste great cause the fat leaks out giving enough to fry the eggs in....and the tomatoes.

Grumpy's bacon is awesome. The thin speck/streaky stuff that you get from Migro's and Coop just doesn't do it for me. You need a couple of proper slices of bacon to make a good Bacon & Egg Sandwich.

Buy a block of Rippli and slice it to the desired thickness.

Cheers,

Nick

Dear Captain,

Thanks for your explanation. I didn't know there were so many types ! Sorry I don't really know too much about Bacon .

I want to find the bacon for English breakfast, also the bacon I can fry a bit and then use them in salad.

May I ask another stupid question ? Is lard something similar to bacon ?

Thanks in advance !

Fei

Hi Lakeside,

Thanks for the info. Is it in package or from the butcher's counter ? How much per pack/kg ?

Thanks

Fei

Will try !

Thanks !

Thanks Smoky,

Do I need to slice them ?

Hi Tooki,

Thanks for replying.

You mean the lard (chopped / big chunk) they sell in Migros and Coop are something also called bacon ?

Thanks.

Fei
