Where to buy books in English

Hi everybody!

Searched the forum but didn't find anything - where is it possible to buy paper books in English now?

Amazon stopped delivering to CH

Orell Fuessli has a... let's say a conservative stock

exlibris the same

I can let Amazon deliver to France or Germany but it's kind of a PITA and maybe there's a better option?

Depending on your feelings about e-books you could take the plunge with a Kindle?

It’s only amazon.com that has stopped delivering to Switzerland, you can still get them from the European amazon sites (.de, .fr, .co.uk etc).

The book depository is also a good place to buy English books.

You could also try the book people although their postage rates are quite high and in my experience they are only worthwhile for book collections.

Wow! Do people still read books?

Did you look in the main Fuessli, or in the English one?

(They also have Flake bars.)

yeah yeah yeah :P people still read books

got a kindle, got the kindle app, kindle desktop program and all that.

had a nook before that

and I still prefer to be mostly electronics-free during the evenings, after 11+h in front of a computer.

last time I checked you had to convert your amazon.com account into an amazon.de account if you wanted to use the amazon.de site, and it was impossible to have both at the same time - has that changed?

And thank you for the recommendations Belgianmum!

JagWaugh maybe I need to visit them again. if it has changed, thank you. I kind of miss the old 3-storeys shop, and the underground Payot, and the one in Niederdorf, and... sigh. Ordering books online just isn't the same as having the real stuff.

(But yay for Flake bars!)

The English one closed a while ago so now it's only on the 4th floor of the one you linked to (if that's the one you meant).

Shit.

Do they at least still sell Flake bars?

I have no idea. I have never had a .com account but I use the .de, .fr and .co.uk sites using the same login.

A very good bricks and mortar English book shop in Zürich is Pile Of Books:

Well worth the trip.

Oddly enough I was looking for English books as I forgot to pack some and I don’t like reading books on my phone.

There is a section in the store called Payot https://mobile.payot.ch

But I found them very expensive. I know in Lausanne there is a small English book store which is very good: https://booksbooksbooks.ch

You don't have to convert your account, but you have to use .de if you want e-books for a kindle. Amazon knows my kindle is in CH now, so even if I log on to the .com site I can't order kindle books there. I have to use .de. But as Belgianmum says, I use the same login and password.

+1 for bookdepository.

second hand shops

I have amazon uk account and books They send to switzerland. I just checked it a moment ago. On amazon account just go to Settings and change country to uk and order your books.

I have purchased some books from https://www.bookdepository.com/ . They have decent prices and have a wide range of different types of books. Maybe they have what you are looking for.

Or just download the Kindle app on your Mac computer (if you own one!)

Second this. Although a subsidiary of Amazon they do free shipping to a lot of countries, including Switzerland, since they’re UK based.

I usually do a price comparison between them and amazon.

Often, but not always, amazon actually works out cheaper even when the shipping costs are added on.

Hi 3wishes, that's strange. I bought my kindle from amazon.de, but I registered it with Amazon.com. I buy all my ebooks from there. Did you register the kindle with .de?

but as you say the same amazon login works at all amazon locations. I have ordered physical goods from .de, .fr. co.uk and .com.

If you are ever in Basel, Bider & Tanner has a nice English selection and they will order any book you would like. Not quite at Amazon prices...but at least you are supporting a local business.
