Where to buy hobby wood?

So I'm thinking of trying my hand at a small hobby project with some wood boards, and I'm looking for any hardwood that is 3mm->6mm in thickness.

Bauhaus has 10mm stuff, but its just a bit too thick for my needs (just trying to build a small-ish box with a hinged lid).

Thanks!

Matt

I think I saw somewhere (a couple of years ago, so don't know how useful this is ), that Jumbo sold custom-cut wood...

Perhaps best to call before going there and finding out they don't sell it though

Hornbach:

They have various types of wood of various thicknesses in their Möbelbau section.

The thinnest hardwood on the Hornbach website is 18mm.

Jumbo probably does custom cut wood (in the large ones) but that normally means length or width, but rarely thickness (at least most of these shops don't have a planer in my experience).

Thanks for the hint about Hornbach, but as mentioned it is all thick wood, more for proper furniture.

Perhaps a carpenter could help, or EFer RTN who makes very nice stuff.

You will not find any it is not a product that I have seen here. One option is to use parquet but the inside would be different or get 18mm thickness and split the top layer off. This is 5 or 6mm thickness on high quality parquet.

Can you recommend somewhere from the EU to ship in? Hm... this is unfortunate. I'll have to get creative.

Just a question, by hardwood, you mean not plywood (Sperrholzplatte) made from birch, ash, or populous?

I would take any real wood plank, not plywood. I just need it to be relatively hard as I'm going for a slightly thinner wall here, since the overall dimensions are only going to be about 18cm*14cm, and I want the inner dimensions to not be tiny.

As well big bulky walls on a product that small... not the look I'm going for

so you mean you're looking for large pieces of Massivholz/solid wood, am I right?

Not large

4x 20cm*10cm*3-6mm

Something like that to start. I'd like to be able to rebuy as well, as if this box works out I'll make a couple of more.

I will check at the FabLab in Zurich, I will use them for laser engraving the wood anyways and perhaps they have some stock on hand, as they are all about the hobby DIY projects!

Then I understood you right, although you used the wrong terms

( Hardwood )

Sorry an other question. Why not plywood? It has some good reason why you can not find solid wood planks as thin as requested.

Edit: If you need super stable then go for Flugzeugsperrholz, it is made of birch and for a thickness of 4mm it has up to eight plies.

If cost is a factor and you can live with less stability use 3 ply birch plywood. (Birken Sperrholz dreilagig).

The cheapest is popular plywood (Pappel sperrholz), not as sturdy and best when combined with veneer of your favorite wood.

I would still suggest using just the top layer of parquet. Your choice of hardwood is unlimited but you will need to get a carpenter to put it through a thickness planer or just chisel the base off and sand it. If you are cheeky go to a parquet shop and ask for a sample or if they have an old odd board. Forget Germany and the Internet get creative and practice your bad deutsch with a smile.

I know I mentioned this shop before. I have nothing to do with them and do wish their prices were a bit lower. They are still on my mind because I just visited them.

It's plywood, not solid, so not what the OP wants.

There goes my German Comprehension credibility.

Thanks, Glowjupiter, and sorry, OP. Good luck finding what you are looking for.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! The reason I don't want to go plywood like the links you posted is the appearance of the ... sides? of the wood. The part that shows the layers. I want this to be a very light/delicate box.

As for practicing the German with a smile, oh I do that a lot I'd have to find a carpetner with a planer though. Can you get untreated hardwood parquet around here? I'd like to go with a variety of stains (well really, to learn how they all look as well).

a thread with Vostok4's and Glowjupiter's avatars is a bit like watching the Muppet Show

It will be a delicate box indeed if you go with solid wood that thin.

Maybe cherry or olive may work. A talk with a carpenter specially a Möbelschreiner would clearly help.
