This weekend the weather app in my android HTC Legend said "Rain & snow" for ZH....
Anyone experienced the same?
I went to the new Swisscom shop that opened today in Zurich stadelhofen... and they have it!!!
i called them to get an offer last week, for renewal of my contract, too. luckily, i could get to the support, after some time of silent search, he said he couldn't find the list of all phone offers online, and suggested to post me the special list of offers according to my data. so, i accepted. he said i'll receive the post in two days, and kindly gifted me with free orange box minutes due to the wait, which was already part of 'my offers' when i was able to check some time ago
then, i receive the post in 5-6 days, and open the letter to see a message telling me to check my online account for specialized offers ) of course, the 'my account' is not still available...
anyways.. i was considering iphone and htc desire, and iphone delivery times are up to 10 weeks now, and the desire doesn't seem to have a warning for such a long time. does anyone know about their offers for existing customers? is it worth it? would they sell machines with the updated software? (it will be sim locked, and i feel like i read that is a problem for updates)
and one more q: htc desire doesn't have the front facing cam, does it?
As for the Desire: don't get a branded / locked device. It's completely unclear if and when those will get the new firmware. It's completely possible that Orange Switzerland doesn't get it at all. Just get an unlocked phone from Digitec or mediamarkt. They'll also be able to extend your existing Orange plan.
Do you have to stick with Orange? Why not switch to Sunrise? They have a much better network and (for most people) lower prices.
Anyway - the Desire doesn't have a front- facing camera. But trust me: you don't need that. Nobody uses video chat anyway. First of all: who are you going to use it with? And then: the iphone's video capabilities are limited. It only works over wifi and will still cost you a phone-call because the video session is initiated over a normal phone line.
My contract expired at the end of July, for 4-6 weeks before they'd been calling my landline promising offers but always when I was away. When I finally got to their site there was a bunch of phones offered to me, obviously the iPhone 4 but the Desire was not one of them. Is the Desire being offered to anyone for a contract renewal with Orange? How personal are those personal offers?
And I can't login to the site either.
The devil makes work for idle hands though. I worked out that in two years with the iPhone I'd not paid one single franc over the contract subscription to Orange for Swiss usage, I've never used more data, calls or SMS than the contract. The only time I've paid them is for roaming data, calls or SMS mostly in the UK and France.
So, if i could find a Desire to buy sim-free and use a pay-as-you-go card in the UK I'd personally save a lot of money compared to paying Orange for a sim locked phone of any description. Orange rolled my contract over automatically but it's only twelve months so I can ditch them next year and use Sunrise which would be cheaper for me.
And as dawiz mentions, there's some other good reasons to look at unlocked, unbranded android phones.
Which means Orange have screwed up, had they offered me a contract Desire I'd have taken it, by screwing the website up and not offering the phone I want I went away and looked at my bills and came up with a better, cheaper option. You would think if any serious number of people did the same they're going to notice it on their bottom line.
I personally believe that the Iphone 4 is still a very good phone despite the whole reception issue, but it just isn't "the best" anymore like Iphones used to be (or perhaps never were, but that was the perception of many people I think). Either one would probably be a great phone.
As far as personalization goes, the Desire is so much fun with that! All of the little things you can do with it are just absolutely incredible and the screen is amazingly beautiful.
Just my two cents, for what it's worth
Attaching a pic I took with my phone...
buying a new toy once in a while is fun, and it will be fun if it is incorporated into an offer, for which i will continue paying; that's why i am considering this. normally, my renewal period is around may, but the offer is online nowadays, so i want to check out for a profitable option. i believe switching to another network will require a few months' time if not only two months before the end of current contract.
anyways, in the few times i cold see a list of offers on my account, i also couldn't see htc desire, that's why i called them for a price, and i hope they've updated it, so if i can log in to my offers i might see something. will let you know if i get a number...

Simply stunning

Price without subscription CHF 699.-
CHF 499.- (subscription extended by 12 months) By renewing your contract online, you get an additional discount of CHF 20.- on your next bill
CHF 349.- (subscription extended by 24 months) By renewing your contract online, you get an additional discount of CHF 40.- on your next bill
OK, that confirms what I thought, people are being given different options for their renewals. I'm not being offered the Desire at any price by Orange. I think that sucks
There's no way it's worth 499 for 12 months though, you can buy the handset (if it ever becomes available) for around 550 from other places.
This morning, I finally logged in and accepted the offer off the internet for a 10.chf monthly reduction, I've been trying to login since July 30th to do that. So Orange then tried to claim that my contract couldn't be ended until August 11th 2011. After I shouted at them they agreed that was unreasonable as their systems hadn't been working since July 30th so they made that the date and honored the 10 chf reduction.
I know it's only a fortnight difference but FFS, it's not my fault their systems have been unreachable for two weeks. Not only that, but I specifically asked them on the phone last week if accepting an offer implied acceptance of a new contract and they said no.
Good job that Comco stomped on their merger plans :

If this is how they act in a three way market it's hard to imagine how bad they'd be in a two way market. Although I don't see why we must have competition for mobiles and not supermarkets but that's a whole other story
I could do with Skype though. I saw it installed on a Desire in the UK but can't find it in the Marketplace. It was called "Skype (beta)".
But more importantly, does anyone have any ideas of where to get it unlocked in Zurich ?
As for the unlocking: not sure the Desire can be unlocked by anyone except the phone vendor. You might want to call O2 and ask them to do it. AFAIK they will do it if you can prove hat you live in Switzerland.
One question however: how do you know it's locked? Does it tell you the SIM doesn't work or is the internet simply not working? If the latter is the case, you might simply have to add your Swiss provider's APN in the network settings.
