I know Nimbuzz from my iPhone but I don't like it. Would rather have the proper Skype app.
And no, O2 won't unlock it for me. I spent an hour yesterday on the phone to customer support and even the shop I bought it in, just to hear that they are "really sorry" but they can't unlock it, because of the warranty.
I said that I wouldn't care about warranty and would even sign that I didn't care about it, if they would just unlock it. They still wouldn't do it.
Am totally annoyed now and very tempted to bring it back in 2 weeks time when I'm over there again.... unless I get it unlocked here in Zurich.
I wouldn't worry about the Desire HD yet. Considering that the Desire still isn't readily available, it'll probably take until next year until it hits Switzerland.
Apart from that: not sure HTC's announcement of the HD is a good idea with lots of people waiting for their ordered Desires.
I'm considering getting the Galaxy too. Do you mind me asking what provider and call plan you went with? I'm familiar with the Swiss market at all am and trying to work out whether I should just buy one in Ireland before I leave (in two weeks) or get one get there.
Also, how are you finding it? Some of the online reviews has been very positive so far. It certainly looks great.
I'm no expert on Android, but it seems to me that its not a platform suited for big lumbering giants like Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc.. who are
used to controlling firmware releases and locking down features, rather than having to chase Google's lead. You just have to look at the Xperia X10 to see a great phone stunted by an out of date iteration of the Android OS.
Just wait until you've installed a couple of apps. I was very excited about the SGS but after a couple of days I had to realize that the stock firmware is seriously flawed. It has a massive driver problem with the internal storage card. Once the memory fills up and the device starts using the internal card, it becomes unbearably slow. Just look for galaxy s and lag on YouTube. It's so bad that I've had the sgs in my drawer for weeks. Samsung still hasn't released a new firmware that patches the bug. There are some leaked Russian fw versions around for it but Samsung says you lose your warranty if you flash those.
I really don't recommend this device at this time. Samsung announced Froyo for it for late September - but then again, it'll probably pushed to October. By then, the Desire HD becomes available.
Not sure where to post this anymore....a few htc threads going on...
Anyhow, looking for some ideas. My desire has slowed down immensely in the last week. To the point where, if I am looking through settings (for example), I’ll touch to open something and it takes a few seconds for the green 'touch highlight' to show up, then another few seconds for the new page to actually open.
This is also happening with my apps. Opening or closing a new app is taking longer and longer.
I read on an android blog/review site about something (which i can't remember the name of) which seem to be like a kind of de-fragging/formatting to speed up the phone. Has anyone done something like this? My main concern is that I will make things worse and f'up some key software component.
I still dont' have the froyo update so not sure if that is worth waiting on if it might help speed things up, as it is rumoured to do.
Where did you get your Desire from? Is it orange branded? You will be a few months for froyo then.
My advice is to do a system reset. Make sure all your settings are backed up etc. All your apps will be waiting to be re-downloaded in the Market when you are out.
It's very strange. I've had my desire since April and not had this problem. If the problem persists then take the phone back. If it's SIM free call HTC. If branded then go back to the shop you got it from.
Thanks. Will try the reset. I got it through Sunrise, so hopefully they are faster than Orange with the froyo update.
Might be useful to get rid of some apps I am not using anymore. I know I can uninstall them but seems to take too long to do that manually.
Am wondering if it is a specific app I downloaded recently that is causing the problems. I guess only way to check is to reset and only reinstall the ones I was using previously and then check the new ones one by one.
I'm pretty sure that's because you have too little memory space and you've installed too many apps. Try to uninstall a few unneeded apps to free up some space and your Desire will be as fast as before!
I am using a Task Manager, and suspect it might be this app, since the timing fits . It's not a task killer but since it can access everypart of the software in order to be able to individually control any one function, I suspect it is what is slowing me down. too bad, it's a cool app and seems to be able to do everything imaginable. Might take it off and once I have froyo will mount it to the card.
For the Galaxy S users: there's a new firmware available. It fixes the lag issue, mostly. The phone's still considerably slower than the Desire with Froyo; but then again, it's probably Froyo that makes the Desire faster. Froyo will be out for the SGS in about 5 weeks. However, the fix is pretty good and now makes the SGS a good alternative to the Desire.
- Uninstalled all task killers. They break things and can cause battery drain.
Installed Android System Info app, which lets you see what's running, what's taking up memory what's taking up CPU. Then you can check that periodically to see if your "idle" apps are taking up some CPU when they shouldn't be. Regarding clearing memory, I don't think it's so important because the OS will run its own memory cleanup routines when memory gets low.
I just renewed my contract with Orange & got my hand on the only desire phone in Geneva the same day, I seriously don't get the fuss about iPhone (i owned one myself and didn't get along with, though I'm a MAC geek), desire by far is one of the best phones i've used, Android OS is really stable, practical & fun to use.
Once I'm on my computer, I will post some real great apps that I have tried.
I couldn't agree more. I like the iPhone (while I really dislike Apple). But my honest opinion is that Android has evolved so far in the last couple of months, that most latest gen Android phones beat the iPhone in every aspect - yes, even the screen, if you loom at the Galaxy S.
