My hubby and I are having Kimchi withdrawal from our Singapore years -- does anyone know if we can buy some here in Zurich?
I believe it is the season for Kimchi in Asia right now -- I think it is a Korean dish though we've eaten it in several places in Asia. It is a pickled (very!) spicy cabbage added to soups, stir-fries, and stews. Though hubby eats it straight up.
It's always Kimchi season in Asia. ;-) I would guess they have it in Globus in Zurich, but have not looked for it yet. We found it at the Asia market on Milchbuck, I guess New Asia was the name. En Guete!
There is an Asian store underneath the Sihl Quai/Hauptbahnhof Station. I am pretty sure that they have kimchi. There is another Asian market about 100 meters away on Josefstrasse.
Wow -- great leads everyone! I will definitely check them out. If I can find the right ingredients, I will try to make some too. And so a new winter tradition is born.
Thanks SO much for your help I'll post back when I we've sampled.
Funny you asked. I still livein USA and there is tons of Kim Chi. Especially in the huge Asian supermarkets. Being vegetarian and health consious person I avoid most of it - not fan of MSG and bonnito.
So one of the solutions is to make it yourself!
It is not that hard.
My worries were more with the availability of the products in Switzerland - I was in Zuerich 2 months ago and pretty unhappy with the selection. Be it soy milk, seaweed, Asian vegetables or dals.
hey today i just saw it in Asian market Feldstrasse (Kalkbreite). it packed in transparent plastic bag about half kg. hmm.. looks spicy and and juicy.. nyummiii
I'm Korean who moved to Zurich a couple of months ago from London.
I used to buy Kimchi in London but now I make Kimchi once a month. Making Kimchi has been quite interesting as I change my basic recipe every time, i.e. add onion, radish or substitute sugar with ground pears etc.
Anyhow here is my basic recipe for Kimchi. Most of ingredients can be found in Migros or Coop except Korean red pepper powder and Korean fish sauce. These can be found in Yumi Hana(Zurich).
Ingredient:
2 Chinese cabbages
1/2 cup of salt
water
15 table spoons, Korean red pepper powder(I like mine hot and spicy!)
4 table spoons, minced garlic
2 tea spoons, minced ginger
2 table spoons, sugar
4 table spoons, Korean fish sauce(known as Kimchi sauce in store)
1. Cut bottom parts of cabbages, separate leaves and wash them
2. Place cabbage leaves in a large bowl, add salt to each leave, tossing gently to combine.
3. Cover cabbage leaves with water and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour. (After 1 hour, you'll find leaves have become soft.)
4. Drain and squeeze.
5. Combine cabbage with remaining ingredients.
This is it! I usually put Kimchi in a well-sealed plastic tub, leave the tub in a fridge for a couple of days then serve.
YumiHana is a great place. Not only does it have Korean groceries and ingredients, it's also a small restaurant serving great food and happy staff. I love the elderly Korean lady, she's really sweet.
That's right. The Kimchi at Yumihana is made in Asia and flown in. Apparently, the same quality is nearly impossible to make here. The chili peppers here don't have the same pep.
Hi, there. Could someone give me the directions to get to Yumi Hana store in Zurich? I will be coming from Basel on the train. So, the directions from the train station would be super!
ahah Phos! Yeah well even for storage..I opened the door of my fridge this morning and even on a sealed plastic container, the smell is so strong! I miss my kimchi fridge sitting almost aside from the house
For Yumi hana I confirmed the Kimchi is coming from Korea, the home country of kimchi !!!~~
I just arrived in Swizterland but once you are in Zurich, you just get off at Bahnofplatz tram station ,walk down on Bahnofstrasse and it is the first street on your left
When you get off the train in Zurich HB, walk towards the 'big clock' meeting point, past the L'Occitane shop on your right until there's a big exit on your right. Take it, walk out to cross the street and the street you want is right in front of you on the left side (Schutzengasse). Yumi-hana is on the right side about 60m farther.
P.S. Love your Labi pup picture. Reminds me of the foster dog we had.
