Where to exchange Slovak koruna?

It is amazing the things you find when you're preparing to move. My husband and I found some Slovak koruna that we wanted to exchange to Francs (or if need be, Euros). I've been to three major banks in Basel and the exchange office - all of them say they are not allowed to exchange Slovak currency.

Slovakia switched to the Euro in January 2009, so it isn't very, very old cash...just slightly old.

Does anyone have suggestions? It is worth a few hundred francs, so it is worth it for us to find a place to exchange it.

Try the SBB Travel offices - I used to change my travel money there for a good rate (back then) and they should be able to if it's still legal tender....

I tried that, they won't take it

That's a bit of a disappointment.... if they do not take it, there's little choice left... maybe Postfinance, Basel Kantonalbank... or if it comes to the worst a Wechselstube/Exchange bureau....

Try it in a bank over the border maybe... hope they are more accomodating..

I've tried BKB, UBS, PostFinance and the SBB exchange. I'm going to give it a shot in Germany, unless someone comes up with a better idea. I've even emailed the Slovak embassy in Switzerland for help!

Slovak Koruna is no longer "legal tender". Only the Central Bank in Slovakia can oblige.

Urgh. That's been my fear. And neither of us is at all planning on going to Slovakia in the next few years.....

Hmm, maybe you can sell them to a Slovakian EF member?

Perhaps make a trip to Slovakia and have a good Slivovica or Beherovka or genuine Budweiser for Xmas or NYE2010?

Heh, well, while it is a few hundred francs worth, it would probably just about pay to get there for the holidays! But thanks for the suggestion

For anyone else who encounters this, I've done some more research, and apparently the cash can be exchanged by post with the Slovak National Bank.
