Where to find IPA (isopropyl alcohol) for electronics?

Hi all,

A bit random I know, but I was looking in my local Migros Do it / Jumbo for some IPA as I want to clean up some electronic devices, microchips etc. I thought I'd be able to just pick IPA up anywhere but I could not for the life of me find it. I also did a quick online search and it doesn't seem to be that readily available in CH unless I buy gallons of the stuff... So my question is, what are fellow English Forum users using instead / where are you buying IPA?

We buy IPA in Galaxus https://www.galaxus.ch/de/s7/product…ittel-24029814

Normal alcohol.

Tom

actually, where did you find gallons of the stuff. i was trying to buy larger quantities instead of only 150ml bottles for 348'323 Fr per ml.

A drogerie

It’s almost half that price at Reichelt.

1L is CHF 13,40

Try asking the Pharmacist at your local apothecary. They can often order you small amounts of household chemicals (cleaning alcohols, peroxides, glycerin, etc) for personal use.

"personal use". reminds me of when i was a geeky 12 year old and went to the pharmacy to buy methylated spirits. was refused and had to get parents to go. my innocent childhood was unware of the common substance abuse going on at the time in the area and only wanted it for my chemistry experiments!

Yeah, I remember being asked what I needed glycerin for as a teenager in a tone that implied I was into something nefarious, like drugs or bombs. Instead, I taught her how to make DIY bubble mix for backyard giant bubble blowing. I saw her again later when she came to pick up her kids from the day-camp we were running that week.

I buy it at the Muller Reformhaus stores. It's usually located near their eye drops, first aid, etc. But you can also buy it at apothekes.

oh. do tell me the secret of giant bubble mix!

If you only want a small amount then buy a hand disinfectant, some of them are 100% ethanol.

Conveniently in a spray container

And I was hoping for the Indian Pale Ale alcohol.

It's pretty simple: Mix water and washing up liquid/dish soap until you get a reasonable amount of suds. If you try it at this stage, you should be able to blow bubbles, but they will immediately pop instead of floating nicely. Then you mix in a healthy pour of glycerine which increases the surface tension and helps the bubbles hold their form. Keep adding glycerine until the kids can start chasing bubbles blowing in the breeze. I seem to remember like 250-500 ml of glycerine gives you decent bubble mix covering the very bottom of a kiddie pool (for the big backyard bubbles).

Coop sells a cleaning alcohol, however this isn’t 100% alcohol.
