I'll be starting work for an airline based at Zurich Airport in March.
I'm currently looking at apartments which are within easy reach of the airport by public transport.
Can anybody suggest a nice area of Zurich which is within a maximum of 20 minute public transport journey? So far I've looked at Winterthur, but would really appreciate some more advice.
You can try to find an appartment in Kloten. It^s less than 10 min with the bus. Oerlikon also is very close and easy to reach with the train. Opfikon also...Good luck!
keep in mind that if you are close to the airport you will hear the noise of the planes(at home). If you are fine with that then Kloten and Opfikon will be very good options
20 minutes of travel time is pretty decent if your travel is directly by train and no intermediate stops.
you could stay near the Zurich city (Seefeld area) lake and catch a train to the flugafen
The 520 bus goes through Kloten, Embrach , Rorbas out to Teufen (which is very quiet and rural).I get the bus most days to the airport - no problems. By the way Lufingen is very cheap for taxes - you may want to bear this aspect in mind.
Bulach is a good place. 15 minutes from airport by car or about 25 minutes with bus. excellent public transport systems and a lovely town out in the country. we also seem to escape noise from airplanes..
Almost anywhere in close proximity of the centre of Zurich 20-25 mins away as long as it's near a decent train station. Takes me 25 mins from 8045 Zurich.
The Glattalbahn, Tram 10 line is a big boon for people working at the airport. You could also live in the city, and still reach the airport conveniently.
I second the thoughts on Bulach just a short bus ride from the airport. I also work for an airline based at Zurich airport and I will be moving from my flat in Bulach in the next few months.
Beware of Bulach: traditionally it has one of the highest tax rates in the Canton of Zurich. "Taxwise", you're far better off in Winkel or Bachenbulach.
David1 - I work at the Airport as well, but not crew.
If you are "young, free and single" I would personally recommend Oerlikon.
It is not the nicest area a la countryside in Bulach, but for early starts and late finishes, you've got the Number 10 Glattbahn tram, regular trains and the 768 bus starts ca.0530hrs.
i'm living at Opfikon. nearly Hilton hotel. 5 mins by bus 759,768,735 or Turm 10.or 15 mins by walk. it's really great position for who works at the airport.
I love my area which is close to the airport as well. it is in the "Kreis 6", near the park called Irchel. Tram 10 will be taking you to the airport from there.
If you can, and haven't done already, spend a day or two and tour the area(s) - on (relatively cheap) public transport - before making a decision.
Chose the place, based on the local (personal) services that meet your wishes. There is no point in being in an urban area when you wish to be in a rural one. Both are easily possible "close to the Airport". I live "rural (working farms, horse stables, and vine-yards :-) , lots of woods (I have a dog), even a working flour mill) - and my time to the airport by direct bus (520) is 21 minutes (up to 23:20).
I can still get into Zurich Main station, bus + train, in 35 minutes.
Tax - yes, 2 villages close together, could (and often do) have quite different tax levels. Although for me personally, I'll pay (a little) extra to be "where I really want to be".
So... go for the area that delivers what you want when... leaving the airport.
Note: My biggest concern is just how quickly I can make it to the airport.
Answer : Generally, very quickly!
Note: I'll be working as a flight attendant, and when 'on-call', I'll need to be at the airport within a maximum of 1 hour.
Answer : 1 hour, and you can travel a "long way" in Switzerland. However, the frequency of the public transport is obviously the key. You can see for yourself by going to http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm and checking travel.
Note: How long does it typically take to find an apartment in the Zurich region, and what documents does the landlord require?
Answer : Not easy to - simply - answer.
Apartments come "free" normally on half-year, or quarterly, dates. So quarterly would be 1-Jan, 1-Apr, 1-Jul etc.
I found my second (unfrnished) Apartment 3-4 months in advance. My first (furnished) Apartment, I found 1 month in advance.
Documents - ha ha ha... in my first case, the farmer, spat on his palm, and shaked hands. Literally! In the second case, my Landlord asked (and checked upon) references and signed a formal contract.
I would say - both experiences were.... magnificient i.e. 100% honourable.
