Where to live in Lausanne region - New PhD student

Hey there!

I'm a new PhD student at EPFL - Lausanne and I'm looking for a room in a shared apartment. I'm coming from a foreign country (Italy) and I've just visited Lausanne for a week last summer.

What I'm looking for would be:

• rent <= 1000 CHF/m

• single room >= 16 m2

• distance <= 30 min from EPFL by walk or public transport

Based on these informations, what place (Lausanne, Renens, Saint-Sulpice, Ecublens, ...) would you advise to look for a housing?

I'm asking this because I've also heard about the difference in taxes on salary regarding where you live and also I don't have much info regarding those different communes (I don't feel the need to be in the city center but I'd also like to live in a place which is well connected and not too far from the "living" part of the city).

I've already tried to look in the forum but I found only a small number of old thread and maybe something has changed in last years.

Thanks to anyone who will take a look at this thread in advance

Hi,

Canton Vaud is above Swiss average in income tax. There are municipalities with slightly lower or higher taxes but 1-2% difference is not a dealbreaker if you find a nice place to live. This is a map of tax income by municipality on 2016 (or gemeinde in German) https://interaktiv.tagesanzeiger.ch/...enincontroller

FWIW, one of my ex-colleagues worked a while at UNIL and lived in Bussigny. I guess we all have the same constrains while studying.
