Where to live near Roche in Basel

Hi guys,

what are the places near to Roche? As I want to rent an apartment near to roche...

any help appreciated...

Thanks and Happy New Year to all...

Which site? Roche is spread across Gross and Klein Basel. In general though, the advice everyone always gives is that wherever you live in Basel the transport system is so good that you're only 10-15 mins max away from where you want to be.

It doesn't really matter where you live, given that wherever you live in Basel the transport system is so good that you're only 10-15 mins max away from where you want to be.

Hi the postcode is 4070...

Thanks

As a follow-up to my previous (rather cheeky) post, I would add that it really doesn't matter where you live in Basel . It's a small city and easy to navigate by public transportation. The areas close to the big employers here (Novartis & Roche) are not the nicest / prettiest parts of the city, and given the compact scale of the place, a lot of people choose to live a little further away.

To complicate matters even more, if you are prepared to drive and have access to parking at the office, there's a huge choice within a 15-minute commute. I live in a tiny village in Baselland and love it -- it's a totally different feel from living in downtown Basel, yet I'm still into the office in 15 minutes by car.

There's a lot of choice to suit all tastes in Basel. I suspect you've been given 3 months in temporary accomodation as part of your relocation package; use the time to get to know the city rather than pre-judging where you think you should live based on a map.

Good luck and welcome to Basel!

OK, so you're at HQ in Grenzacherstrasse. If you wanted to live really near work you could look at properties in the Wettstein quartier which is where the site is. Its quite pricey compared to the less glamarous Clara quarter, but its a nice place to live with easy access to the river. However as I've said, Basel is so compact and well integrated transport-wise that even Bruderholz down in the south is a very easy commute (Tram 15 from Bruderholz to Wettsteinplatz tram stop).

Hi Thanks so much for the map...

Thanks

I will be at the Hochstrasse campus, right across the train station.

Moving towards the end of Feb. If I understand correctly, Roche will assist you in finding an apartment (particularly with the language issues)?

All the best!!

I need to start looking too once I move there.....

If you're moving for a job with Novartis or Roche, they should be providing you with relocation services. This typically includes three months of temporary housing. Homegate or comparis dot ch are good sites to look. You can plug it into Google translator for help. Again, but tram or bus you're never more than 15 mins away from anything. And if you embrace the biking culture here, even shorter time.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Good luck!

Hallo VI,

I would like to live in a village where there is vegetable farming, because farming is my hobby. Could you help me identify. What is the name of your village you live in?

I am also a sort of Village Idiot. I do not like cars/motor vehicles and the noise they make.

I will be travelling to Basel next month.

Hi Castro,

I see you are online. Could you please help me identify a village where I can spend time in calm and serenity? and enjoy farming?

I like the atosphere around Allesheim. BUt you could look anywhere at the end of the tram lines that go to country areas. YOu could also look over the French border, where there is an easy bus ride back into Basel.

Hi, iif you want farmland, and prefer not to drive, then just over the border in Saint Louis, France wouldn't be ideal.

If you don't mind driving, you could consider nice villages in France. Close ones include Hesingue, Rosenau, Village Neuf..

I do not have permission outside Switzerland though. I am on a work permit for Scheiz only.

Hi, I am also likely to be based at Roche HQ but looking to live on german side of the border. Does anybody make a germany-roche commute. Where is the best areas for public transport links. We are looking at lorrach, weil and grenzach...is Rheinfelden (DE) too far?

All are fine if you have a car (even Rheinfelden).

Grenzach is a really easy commute with the 38 bus.

Weil would have the easiest commute if you live on the route of the 55 bus to Claraplatz, but I'd go and see the town before deciding you really want to live there

Lòˆrrach is OK if you're by an S-Bahn stop or right at the border by the 6 tram - but it's probably the most awkward of the three.

Rheinfelden has fairly frequent trains to Badischer Bahnhof, but the commute will be noticeably longer than the other three - whether it's excessive however depends on how you find commuting!

Thanks for the info. Don't have a car and not keen to get one. Will cycle during the better weather and take the bus otherwise.

Consider Baselbiet if you want to save on taxes and also (potentially) secure cheaper rent.

Think as for the food for thought...

Hmm....I'll be paying more in childcare (3 preschoolers) and health insurance though in CH (wife and kids will be covered by current german health insurance for free) ... I'll need to look at sums again!

And we are already living in Germany (dusseldorf) so we are "in the system" here

You bring up a good point however....Returns to the budgeting spreadsheet.....

The tax difference between BS and BL is getting noticeably smaller - I wouldn't even get 1CHF/day saving for me moving from BS to some Gemeinde in BL.

It's certainly not enough difference that it would sway my decision over other factors - the right flat, local facilities, nice surroundings.

If you want to work in Basel and tax saving is important, then you move to Aargau, certain parts of Solothurn or even further afield. BL is attractive for other reasons.
