Also try The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones
Big Love was a great drama on HBO about polygamy. My wife and I were addicted to it.

Deadwood was an excellent show.
Also currently love Justified - but maybe I'm just a fan of Timothy Olyphant.
I've really been into Sons of Anarchy in the past, and waiting for the next season of Game of Thrones.
Though if you're into cop dramas, someone had already mentioned Southland and The Shield.
If you want excitement :
Breaking Bad is definetly no escape, you always eager to see what next coming, you will learn some new trades ....
Prison Break is little slow in starting but full of thrill & strategy...
Game of thrones .. Very different and beautiful direction and making , must watch , i am waiting for next season...
Rome is quiet nice to see if you have interest in History
Walking Dead good story line and fresh ...
Rescue Me is very, very good in the early seasons...but tails off a bit later on but still worth a watch. Tommy Gavin is a really repellant character but you still root for him.
cheers

I'm sure the world is ready for Sylvania Waters II: The Flying Doctors meet their Underbelly Neighbours, though.
Thanks
Burn Notice meets Minority Report....
slightly more attention-demanding: The Good Wife
Not sure I follow about Good Wife needing attention.....did anybody on that show ever clutch a straw that didn't turn out to be the grandstand moment in court
Sons of Anarchy - Ron Perlman and "pretty boy" Charles Hummum. Gets pretty graphic. The directoral style changes midway through season 2 - with the tension holding out through each episode. The season finale has some incredible cinematography. Season 3 opener is brutal. Quality character acting by "Piney" and "Bobby" - and some decent eye-candy
Dexter, Damages & United States of Tara have had periods of stellar work but have been disappointing in their last season or so - usually a sign that a series is on the wane
If you're up for US series that are no longer on the air to consider then apart from the obvious in Sopranos & Six Feet Under , consider the 2 seasons of Carnivale - really incredible series that is a mix of style, strong writing and brilliant performances
