Which US TV Series is as good as The Wire?

Just finished watching House of Lies, starring Don Cheadle as a management consultant. Funny, sexy, filthy and sharp. Can't wait for season 2 next January

I too have filled many an intercontinental flight with US TV shows, especially once Swiss started showing utter drivel on the IFE.

Lots of obvious ones mentioned already, but didnt see these mentioned yet (or skimmed over them):

Treme (probably closest to the Wire as about real post Katrina New Orleans)

Lilyhammer is kinda fun if you liked the Sopranos

Raising Hope, has a good 20 minute format.

Hell on Wheels, is a Deadwood like show

Nashville

Smash, both fun in a grown up Glee format

Band of Brothers, was a series of mini-films about WW2 battles Spielberg prod values

Second the comment about House of Lies, which at first seems just offensive, but is very amusing esp if you know the type...

metacritic.com for me has the best TV review-consolidation and I regularly have a trawl there when Im running low on files

an old one for the boys: The Unit.

Try watching Homeland..it swept the Emmy awards this year for best drama series, best writing in a drama series, best actress, and best actor...I had to finish the series in a few days because it was so addicting.

IMDb: Carrie Mathison, a CIA operations officer, is on probation after carrying out an unauthorized operation in Iraq. As a result, she has been reassigned to the Counter terrorism center. Whilst in Iraq, she was warned that an American prisoner had been turned by Al-Qaeda. When Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine Sergeant, is rescued after being held hostage since 2003, she suspects that he is the turned American prisoner. Brody is received home as a war hero, so Carrie goes to any lengths possible, ignoring protocol, to catch him out.

Game of Thrones is also good, but it's based on fantasy.

Crap I just saw your post on page 2 where you said you already watched Homeland and someone else already recommended Game of Thrones..

Last Resort is another new show that I like..

Sons of Anarchy

Weeds

Six Feet Under

Dead Like Me

True Blood

American Horror Story

Walking Dead

Dexter

The Walking Dead is my all time favourite!! Love Rick Grimes!!!

How about Danish series? " The Killing " (in original: Forbrydelsen) is absolutely fantastic!

Series 3 just started on he beeb. It does require concentration if you don't speak Danish though.

There was an US adaptation that is really quite good too, and a different plot.

Person of interest , thoroughly recommended. Sockshare from the link, works very well.

"You are being watched",,,,

One of the better US series that I've watched since M*A*S*H ( no correlation ) in a long while .

I really like Finch, such a cool nerdy dude.

So....tell me...I just finished watching Homeland Season 2 and I can't decide if it was good, or a good idea which ran out of steam after Season 1.....feels like its turning into 24 (which I thought was terrible)

Did people like it?

I got tired of it mid way through the second season. Carrie, all bug -eyed and intense gets on my nerves.

Person of interest, now that i like. But i wonder how long it can go?

Is it not possible to watch without register and giving credit card information???

Yeah.....she is overacting intensely!

Battlestar Galatica a very well made and cleverly written series with a very dark undertone as it mirrors alot of what was happening politically in America during the series. Oz also gets my vote and there is another little known series called the Corner that was the precursor to the Wire.

No. Didn't like it. They called him out too soon. There was so much more to delve into which they wasted for dramatic effect. I think we all assumed he'd get called out at the end of the season. So they wanted to surprise us. But in the end it just seemed forced.

I can see however that there is room for redemption. There is a lot to work with there for season 3.

Yeah, she's really getting on my nerves now as well. Let's hope she can hold it together.

As for other series, I haven't watched most of the ones recommended here. They all seem so dark.

Once Upon a Time I only like because the evil queen had rocking outfits and she's driving my next car. The second season went off the rails. Even more so than Homeland.

I do like The Good Wife. And I also quite like Revenge. CC, you probably won't like it though. It's OTT and a bit of a pastiche of the Dynasty/Dallas genre. At least I think it is. If it wasn't done ironically then there's a problem.

Agreed - the Corner was really interesting - but I watched it AFTER the Wire and - because the characterisation in The Wire was just SO strong, I couldn't quite believe that Lester was now a druggie etc etc

David Simon is a bit of a genius IMO

Definitely Dexter, Weeds and Breaking Bad . The writing in these shows is excellent...

It IS like 24 - it was developed in part by the same guy, Howard Gordon. And just like 24, it starts out great (season 1 was superb) before venturing into the ridiculous and utterly unbelievable. I ain't wasting any more time on that show....but it might be worth it to get another glimpse of Morena Baccarin topless.

The complete opposite of that is Boardwalk Empire, which seemed a bit disjointed the first two seasons, and then HOLY CRAP just blew me away last season when a lot of things just came together. Already great visually, it became a great drama this season, IMO.

If you're looking for brain stimulation, download the BBC's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People miniseries; 30 years old but/and well, well, worth the watch.

Then cleanse your palette with Eastbound and Down . It's a comedy series, no doubt, but with lots of subtle detail and poignant moments hidden behind the main character's narcissism and beautiful mullet. Awesome soundtrack too. I've watched all 3 seasons twice (and I have zero free time, that comes out of my sleep ).
